Newsweek Ready to End Its Print Edition

Marking the beginning of the end for the magazine's 79-year run as a print weekly, Newsweek owner IAC/InterActiveCorp (IACI) said Wednesday the magazine will begin transitioning to an online publication.

Florida Cultural Affairs to Showcase New Historic Antebellum Office

Secretary of State Ken Detzner and the Florida Department of States Division of Cultural Affairs are showing off their new historic digs Thursday night in Tallahassee.

A housewarming event is planned at the division's new office space at the Brokaw McDougall House from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The event is to feature live music by the Zach Bartholmew Trio and a traveling exhibition of Salvador Dalprints from the DalMuseum.

$250,000, Please: Boca Raton Shakes a Tin Cup for Presidential Debate Security

Boca Raton is scrounging for cash to help pay for security when Lynn University hosts the third presidential debate of the 2012 election.

The city, which has requested the state pony up $250,000 for the nonpartisan, nonprofit Commission on Presidential Debates event at Lynn University on Oct. 22, has sent a letter to Gov. Rick Scott. It's asking the state to cover police department expenses, because city fathers anticipate a significant number of protesters for the event and the days leading up to the event.

Casinos' Revenue Hard Count Hits $411 Million in Florida

There is little concern that Florida is in danger of shedding its label as one of the nations largest gambling states.

Revenue jumped 15.1 percent from the prior year at Floridas six gaming facilities in the recently completed 2011-2012 fiscal year. The casinos reported a net revenue of $411.3 million to the Florida Division of Pari-Mutuel Wagering.

The revenue increase comes for a year in which an effort to create a statewide gaming commission and allow at least three mega-casinos to join the gaming party in South Florida died in the Legislature.

Jeb Bush Backs Jeff Brandes Over Jim Frische for State Senate

On Wednesday, former Gov. Jeb Bush waded into one of the most competitive legislative primaries in Florida when he backed Rep. Jeff Brandes, R-St. Petersburg, over Rep. Jim Frische, R-St. Petersburg, for the GOP nod for an open state Senate seat.

"Jeff Brandes has the right stuff to lead in the Florida Senate," Bush said. "Jeff has the courage and real-world experience to tackle the complex issues facing the state of Florida. Having Jeff in the Florida Senate will ensure the residents of the bay area have strong, principled leadership in Tallahassee."
