Obama Energy Policies Cause Another High-Profile, 'Lifelong Democrat' to Flip

John Hofmeister, retired president of Shell Oil Co. and founder of Citizens for Affordable Energy, dropped more than a few jaws Thursday morning when he declared, "I am a lifelong Democrat, but I can't and I won't vote for Barack Obama in 2012."

Keynoting the Florida Energy Summit, the electric Hofmeister said, "I can't vote for the president because I've spoken to him. He told me he wants more of the same energy policies that have driven us to $4 a gallon gas. He isn't going to change course.

U.S. Senate Nominee Connie Mack to Appear as RNC 2012 Convention Headliner

U.S. Rep. Connie Mack, R-Fort Myers, now the partys nominee for U.S. Senate, has been given a headliner role at the Republican National Convention later this month in Tampa.

Mack joins a growing list of Floridians who will be on the national stage the last week of August, as he was one of six additional headliners announced for the event to formally name Mitt Romney the partys presidential candidate.

"I am proud to be able to represent Florida and be a part of officially nominating Mitt Romney as the next president of the United States, Mack said.

Entrepreneur-Grower Developing a Blueprint to Make Sugarcane a Fuel

Picture a fuel that doesn't come from the Middle East, costs as much as six times less to produce than corn ethanol and could actually help the environment.

That's ethanol from sugarcane, which grows like weeds in Florida, and it made something of a star of Bradley Krohn on the first day of Adam Putnam's second annual Florida Energy Summit in Orlando.

Krohn is manager of Highland Envirofuels LLC.

FPL Pitches Rate Settlement

Just days before the start of a possibly contentious hearing before state regulators,Florida Power & Light said Wednesday it will seek approval of a settlement agreement that would increase customers' base electric rates next year by $548 million.

FPL, the state's largest utility, reached the proposed settlement with groups representing large electricity users and scaled back an earlier proposal to raise base rates by about $690 million in 2013.

Rick Scott to Attend Port Manatee Warehouse Groundbreaking

Gov. Rick Scott will be in the Tampa area Friday for the groundbreaking of a giant refrigerated warehouse at Port Manatee.

The port, located at the entrance to Tampa Bay, will host the groundbreaking at 2 p.m. before holding an economic round-table meeting.

Flags Ordered to Half-Staff for Palm Bay Gunnery Sergeant

Gov. Rick Scott has ordered national and state flags lowered to half-staff on Thursday outside the Brevard County Courthouse, Palm Bay City Hall and state Capitol in Tallahassee for U.S. Army Gunnery Sergeant Jonathan W. Gifford.

Gifford, 34, of Palm Bay, died on July 29 while on patrol in Badghis Province, Afghanistan.

Gifford, a critical skills operator approaching 15 years in the service who had completed multiple combat deployments, was assigned to 2nd Marine Special Operations Battalion, Camp Lejeune, N.C.
