Judges Rule New Law Might Reduce Voter Turnout

The United States District Court for the District of Columbia denied approval Thursday evening to part of Floridas 2011 elections law, as it applies to five of the states counties.

The panel of three judges, each of them an appointee of former President Bill Clinton, determined that the provisions reducing the early voting period will have the effect of denying or abridging the right to vote of minorities living in Collier, Hardee, Hendry, Hillsborough, and Monroe counties.

Recounts Called for in One Judicial, Three Legislative Contests

Two state House races, one state Senate contest and a single judicial election from Tuesdays primary are headed into weekend recounts.

Secretary of State Ken Detzner called for the recounts for House Districts 55 and 107, Senate District 27 and the 4th Judicial Circuit Court Group 1 seat as the contests were decided by a margin of 0.5 percent or less of the votes cast.

The county canvassing boards have until 3 p.m. on Sunday to complete machine recounts.

Investigation: No Wrongdoing Found in Teachers' FCAT Coaching

Two elementary school teachers in Gadsden County were cleared of wrongdoing when they interfered or coached student responses on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, the state Department of Education announced Friday.

Florida's Jobless Numbers Grow as Sunshine State Slows Through the Summer

After more than a year-and-a-half downward march, with schools out and many farm workers off for the summer, Floridas unemployment mark took an upward turn in July.

The state Department of Economic Opportunity announced an 8.8 percent, seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for July, with approximately 816,000 out of work from the work force of 9.27 million.

The rate is 0.2 percent above where Florida stood in June, but still 1.8 percentage points lower than where the state was in July 2011.

Florida's Monthly Unemployment Mark Ticks Up

Rick Scott to Make Jobs Announcement in Tampa

With the July unemployment numbers coming out Friday, Gov. Rick Scott will be in Tampa to make a jobs announcement this morning.

Scott is scheduled to be at Netpark Tampa Bay at 9 a.m., according to the governors office.

The monthly jobs numbers are due at 10 a.m.

Later today, Scott will be at Port Manatee for an economic round-table meeting and the groundbreaking of a giant refrigerated warehouse.
