Kevin McCarty to Provide Insurance Fixes to Lawmakers in January

Florida's top insurance official on Wednesday was given a January deadline to come up with a series of proposals to reduce the size of the state-backed Citizens Property Insurance Corp. and to further reduce costs in the state's auto-insurance market.

Florida Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty said he would comply with requests from Senate Banking and Insurance Committee Chairman David Simmons, R-Maitland, who said depopulating Citizens and restoring the state's private insurance market was one of his top priorities as he starts two years as head of the committee.

Palm Beach State College Takes Up Rick Scott's $10,000 Challenge

Palm Beach State College has become the 12th school in the Florida College System to take up Gov. Rick Scotts challenge to create four-year degree programs that cost students under $10,000.

Democrat Mia Jones Files for Florida House Speaker in 2015-2016

Rep. Mia Jones, D-Jacksonville, has formally filed to be speaker of the House in the 2015-2016 session, which could set up a clash with Rep. Daryl Rouson, D-Tampa, for future minority leader.

Whoever wins will have a hard time landing the speaker role.

Democrats were able to erase the Republicans supermajority in the House this past election, but the GOP continues to hold a 76-44 seat advantage.
