Democrat Mia Jones Files for Florida House Speaker in 2015-2016
Rep. Mia Jones, D-Jacksonville, has formally filed to be speaker of the House in the 2015-2016 session, which could set up a clash with Rep. Daryl Rouson, D-Tampa, for future minority leader.
Whoever wins will have a hard time landing the speaker role.
Democrats were able to erase the Republicans supermajority in the House this past election, but the GOP continues to hold a 76-44 seat advantage.
Jones is currently serving as Democratic leader pro tempore.
Jones, a special assistant to Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown, was first elected to the House in 2008.
Darryl Rouson, who is serving as the Democratic policy adviser in the current session, also joined the Legislature in 2008.
The Republicans have already set up their House leadership following the term of Speaker Will Weatherford, R-Wesley Chapel, with the next three currently being Rep. Steve Crisafulli, R-Merritt Island; Rep. Richard Corcoran, R-Trinity, choice for 2017-18; and Rep. Jose Oliva, R-Miami, 2019-20.
