The Bahamas Cries for Help: Humanitarian Crisis on an Unimaginable Scale

September 4, 2019 - 8:00am
Flattened Great Abaco Island in the Bahamas, Sept. 3, 2019

As dawn breaks Wednesday, the world is seeing what a tourist-dependent island nation looks like when a powerful hurricane smashes it to bits: mile upon mile of flooded neighborhoods, shredded homes and businesses, overturned boats and vehicles, and trees stripped of vegetation.

Like Mexico Beach during Hurricane Michael, only Dorian had lashed the islands at major-hurricane strength for an unprecedented 36 hours.

Without Double Standards, CNN Would Have No Standards at All

August 26, 2019 - 6:00am

CNN, the 24/7 news network that actively seeks the president's impeachment, has spent the last three days denouncing Sarah Huckabee Sanders as a "despicable liar" and FOX News for hiring her as a contributor.

Brian Stetler, CNN's chief media correspondent, led the Sanders attack, explaining why the former White House press secretary's new job "deserves outrage and backlash." Here's a boiled-down version of hours of Stetler's talking-heads coverage:

For more than two decades the elite Miami Appellate Department of Greenberg Traurig was the most sought-after dream team for high-stakes court battles in Florida. Gus Barreiro meets with Dozier 'White House Boys', May 2010

If it hadn't been for the tenacity and the passion and the giant heart of one Republican legislator from Miami, it's very possible the horrors that persisted for decades at the Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys in Marianna may never have been exposed.

You Mean We're Finally Acknowledging Northern Everglades Water 'Quality'?

August 9, 2019 - 8:30am

The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) Governing Board voted Thursday "to dramatically expand water quality monitoring within the Northern Everglades watersheds and Lake Okeechobee."

This actually was treated as one of the day's Big Stories.

Pardon me for laughing out loud.

Some 97 percent of the water coming into Lake Okeechobee from the north -- particularly from the Kissimmee area -- has already shown the lake's contaminated water originates on the highly developed northwest side of the Everglades' headwaters.

Julia Nesheiwat

Florida is about to get a climate change czar -- a key staffer charged with "adapting the most vulnerable state in the nation to climate change."

Apparently, say The Miami Herald and other newspapers that collaborated on the story, Gov. Ron DeSantis is set to announce the appointment of new Chief Resilience Officer Julia Nesheiwat. Maybe as early as today.

Immigration, the Democrats' 2020 Waterloo

July 13, 2019 - 9:30am

As a Republican, I should just sit back smugly and watch. If the Democrats want to keep moving hard left on immigration, I should just keep my mouth shut and let them get on with it.

But if you know me at all, you know I don't keep my mouth shut. So here it is:

Immigration -- that one issue on its own -- will give the White House to Donald Trump  in 2020.
