After 10 Glorious Years, Sunshine State News and I Are Passing the Baton

You probably can't imagine how much fun I've had at Sunshine State News over the last 10 years. I don't think anybody could.

The night before the horrific Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School mass murders by former student Nikolaus Cruz, Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum and Florida House Speaker Richard Corcoran held a debate. Democrat Gillum is a current guberatorial candidate, Corcoran is expected to be one soon.

In the wake of the shooting tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, there was no shortage of outcry and calls for political legislation to prevent these atrocities. As is ever the case in the immediate stampede for legislative action, pragmatic thinking is rarely addressed -- but that doesn't stop the desire to score political wins.
"MASON CITY. To get there you follow Highway 58, going northeast out of the city, and it is a good highway and new." -- Robert Penn Warren, "All the King's Men" (1946)
House Ways and Means Committee
Over objections that more money would flow away from public schools and that airport projects could be grounded, the House Ways & Means Committee on Wednesday approved a nearly $350 million tax package that would help farmers impacted by Hurricane Irma and lower a lease tax on businesses.
Companion bills SB 462 and HB 237 seek to ban hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, and other forms of well stimulation in Florida.  Supporters of the bills claim that a ban on fracking in Florida would not impact the state’s existing oil and gas industry. This is simply not true.
After House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes, R-Calif., sent his memo laying out potential abuses of the FISA process by the FBI to the White House, Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., demanded that he be removed as chairman. Nunes was "deliberately dishonest" in pushing to release a "bogus memo," Pelosi declared, and had "disgraced the House Intelligence Committee" with his "partisan effort to distort intelligence."

As the smoke clears from last week’s Beltway budget battle, a Republican congressman from the Sunshine State emerged as one of its winners.
Even if, inexplicably, you occasionally think about things other than major league baseball, consider this: Why are many premier free agents, particularly sluggers and starting pitchers, unsigned even while we are hearing the loveliest four words, "Pitchers and catchers report"? The Major League Baseball Players Association angrily says some teams are more interested in economizing than in winning. The real explanation is that teams are intelligently aligning their behavior with changing information.
When next you shoehorn yourself into one of America's ever-shrinking airline seats, you might encounter a new wrinkle in the romance of air travel. You might be amused, or not, to discover a midsize -- say, 7-feet long -- boa constrictor named Oscar coiled contentedly, or so you hope, in the seat next to you. Oscar is an "emotional-support animal." He belongs to the person in the seat on the other side of him, and he is a manifestation of a new item, or the metastasizing of an old item, on America's menu of rights. Fortunately, the federal government is on the case, so you can relax and enjoy the flight.
