Germany Agrees to Further Aid Holocaust Survivors

Members of the Florida delegation are declaring victory after Germany agreed on Tuesday to provide more financial assistance to Holocaust survivors. Germany announced it would lift caps on assistance to Holocaust survivors for home care.

Earlier this year, a senator and two congressional representatives from Florida out a measure urging Germany to “fulfill its moral responsibility to Holocaust survivors and urgently provide the financial resources necessary to ensure that Survivors live in dignity and comfort in their remaining years.”

Gun Ownership at Lowest Rate In 40 Years, Says Poll

Gun ownership is at a forty-year low in U.S. households, according to a recently-released survey. A CBS News poll found 36 percent of American adults either own a handgun, rifle, shotgun or any other kind of firearm or live with someone who does, which is the lowest percentage since 1978.

Federal Judge Blocks Abortion Law

Siding with Planned Parenthood affiliates, a federal judge late Thursday blocked key provisions of a sweeping new state law that would have barred abortion providers from receiving public funds for other services and required a dramatic increase in inspections of abortion records by health officials.

U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle's preliminary injunction came just hours before the new law would have gone into effect.

Over 150 Bills Become Law in Florida

Over 150 bills will go into law Friday, including the state’s $82 billion budget, a bill to allow parents to transfer their children to any public school that isn’t at capacity, and a bill to cut off funding to organizations associated with abortion clinics.

Lawmakers approved nearly 300 bills during this year’s legislative session. The House passed a slightly higher number of bills (129) over the Senate (116). There were 27 local bills passed during this year’s legislative session. Gov. Scott vetoed three bills, leaving the grand total of bills passed at 269.

Enterprise Florida Cuts Backed by Committee

A committee overseeing the state's business recruitment agency on Thursday supported cuts that will slash 26 positions and shutter several international offices, after lawmakers this year refused to fund one of Gov. Rick Scott's top priorities.

Envisioning a leaner, more efficient public-private agency, the Enterprise Florida Board Executive Committee signed off on a series of recommendations put forward last month as a means to trim expenses by $6 million. The full board will vote on the proposal on Friday.
