Supporters, Opponents Put Light Between Solar Measures

Backers and opponents of a solar-energy proposal on the November ballot aren't making predictions after a separate alternative-energy measure was overwhelmingly approved by voters Tuesday.

Instead of comparing the two measures, the group Consumers for Smart Solar said its "sole focus" is advancing the November ballot proposal. The proposal, known as Amendment 1, is backed by the utility industry and would primarily put into the state Constitution existing rules on the use of solar energy in Florida.

Under federal indictment, state Rep. Reggie Fullwood was one of nine state House incumbents who successfully turned back primary challengers Tuesday.

Fullwood, a Jacksonville Democrat who is facing an October trial on wire-fraud and tax-related charges stemming from the alleged misuse of campaign funds, had about 45.3 percent of the vote to Tracie Davis' 42.5 percent with all precincts reporting in Duval County's House District 13. In the November general election, he will face Republican Mark Griffin, who won the GOP primary for the seat.

Tropical Depression Nine, which is slowly growing in the Gulf of Mexico, is expected to become a tropical storm later Tuesday and will make landfall on Florida by Thursday. The next named storm on the 2016 Atlantic Hurricane Season list is Hermine.
