Return Cuba to 'State Sponsors of Terrorism' List, Urge Florida Congressmen

Two members of the Florida delegation urged the U.S. State Department on Wednesday to return Cuba to the State Sponsors of Terrorism list. 

U.S. Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, R-Fla., and U.S. Rep. Francis Rooney, R-Fla., who used to be the vice chairman of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee when the GOP controlled the chamber, sent a letter on the matter to U.S. Sec. of State Mike Pompeo. 

Both of the Florida Republicans weighed in on why they thought Cuba should be included on the list. 

Rubio Cheers on Latest Sanctions Against Hezbollah

U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., applauded the Trump administration for continuing to sanction Hezbollah. 

This week, the U.S. Treasury Department announced new sanctions against three individuals connected to Hezbollah which the federal government has designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO). The new sanctions target Hezbollah members Amin Sherri and Muhammad Hasan Ra’d, who both sit in the Parliament of Lebanon, and Wafiq Safa. 

FPL Settlement Approved on Irma Costs

Utility regulators on Tuesday signed-off on a $1.3 billion agreement involving Florida Power & Light’s costs for restoring electricity after Hurricane Irma plowed through the state in 2017.

The Florida Public Service Commission approved the settlement between FPL, the state Office of Public Counsel and the Florida Industrial Power Users Group. The agreement finalizes the costs, which will be covered by the utility’s savings from a 2017 federal tax overhaul.

Court Says Pot Law Clashes with Constitutional Amendment

Florida’s law requiring pot operators to grow, process and distribute cannabis and related products created an “oligopoly” and runs afoul of a constitutional amendment that broadly legalized medical marijuana in the Sunshine State, an appellate court ruled Tuesday.

The 1st District Court of Appeal’s decision sent shockwaves through the state’s highly restricted but rapidly growing medical marijuana industry, in which licenses are routinely selling for upwards of $50 million.

At the end of last month, U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis, R-Fla., who had been the vice chairman of the committee when the GOP controlled the U.S. House, brought out the “Ryan Kules Specially Adaptive Housing Improvement Act” which he showcased on Tuesday.

As chairman of the U.S. Senate Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee, Marco Rubio, R-Fla., is championing a proposal to help small businesses with cybersecurity. 

At the end of last month, Rubio teamed up with Sen. Gary Peters, D-Mich., to bring out the “Small Business Cybersecurity Assistance Act" which would let Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs) use grants from the Small Business Administration (SBA) for cybersecurity training, including working with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

A Boca Raton high school principal who came under fire for questioning whether the Holocaust occurred has been removed from his position, according to Palm Beach County school officials. 

“It is out of an abundance of concern and respect for the students and staff of Spanish River Community High School that school district administration has decided to reassign Principal William Latson effective immediately,” a statement from the school district, posted Monday on Twitter, said.
