Kathy Castor's Proposal Gives the FTC More Power to Pursue Companies Targeting Children's Data

This week, U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor, D-Fla., was able to get an amendment added to an appropriations bill and though the U.S. House to protect children’s privacy by giving the federal government more power to go after companies that mine their data. 

Noting that increasingly companies are mining children’s data, Castor proposed giving the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) more power to target bad actors. After her amendment was added to the Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Act on Wednesday, Castor weighed in on her reasons for introducing it.

Supreme Court Blocks Census Citizenship Question

The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday blocked --- at least for now --- a citizenship question from being asked in the 2020 census, saying the Trump administration offered a “contrived” explanation as to why it was needed.

The opinion, written by Chief Justice John Roberts, eased Florida Democrats’ concerns that a citizenship question in Florida, which is a magnet for immigrants, would lead to an undercount of the state’s population.

Vern Buchanan Gets Medicare Assistance Program Through Key Committee

From his seat on the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee, U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Fla., was able to advance through the committee a proposal to fund the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP), which helps with Medicare and insurance questions and problems, for another three years. 

As part of a large Medicare bill, on Wednesday the House Ways and Means Committee included the “Enhancing Consumer Assistance for Medicare Beneficiaries Act” from Buchanan, U.S. Rep. Jimmy Gomez, D-Calif., and U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell, D-Mich.

Stephanie Murphy: FAA Sending $4.5 Million to Sanford International Airport

This week, U.S. Rep. Stephanie Murphy, D-Fla., announced more federal funds will be going to Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB) to upgrade lighting equipment, building a new tarmac and have more airfield guidance signs.

Murphy announced on Tuesday that SFB will receive $4,464,990 from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). 

'The Most Egregious Judicial Activism in the History of Florida'?

Reversing the state’s retroactive consideration of certain death-penalty cases would amount to “the most egregious judicial activism in the history of Florida,” a lawyer for a Death Row inmate argued in a brief filed Monday with the Florida Supreme Court.

The filing, in the case of convicted murderer Duane Eugene Owen, comes as a revamped Supreme Court is exploring whether to reverse course on decisions that allowed dozens of convicted murderers to have their death sentences reconsidered.
