State Advances Plan for Spanish-Language Ballots

Voters throughout the state will have access to Spanish-language ballots in time for next year’s presidential election, under regulations Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration is advancing.

DeSantis in April said he wanted to make Spanish-language ballots available statewide, noting that Florida “has a significant Spanish-speaking population and our state is home to many Puerto Ricans who moved here after the devastation of Hurricane Maria.”

24 Small and Rural Florida Communities to Share $16.2 Million for Infrastructure

Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Tuesday $16.2 million in awards for 24 small and rural communities across the state through the Florida Small Cities Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program. The program, administered by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO), helps communities fund infrastructure improvements and housing rehabilitation.

The Florida Small Cities Community Development Block Grant program is a partnership between the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and DEO.

Still buoyed by the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team's overwhelming World Cup win this summer on soccer's biggest stage, two Florida Democrats are continuing their push for the team to be paid on an equal footing with the men's team. 

Last week, U.S. Rep. Lois Frankel, D-Fla., introduced the “Athletics Fair Pay Act," which would ensure equal pay for all Olympic and amateur athletes. U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor, D-Fla., is cosponsoring the bill.  

The bill is being championed in the upper chamber by U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., and U.S. Rep. Patty Murray, D-Wash. 

Rubio, Wilson Working with Leading Dems to Raise Social Status of Black Men and Boys

Two members of the Florida delegation -- Republican U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio and Democratic U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson -- are working with a pair of hopefuls for the Democratic presidential nomination on a proposal to establish a federal  Commission on the Social Status of Black Men and Boys. 

Rubio announced he was working with U.S. Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., and U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., on the proposal to create the commission which would be under the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights’ Office and “would recommend policies to improve current government programs.”

The Florida Office of Financial Regulation ordinarily draws little attention.

But for the past two months, it has been in the center of a controversy stemming from allegations of sexual harassment against Commissioner Ronald Rubin, who has been suspended from his job leading the agency.

The controversy could come to a head Thursday, when Gov. Ron DeSantis and the state Cabinet discuss an inspector general report about the allegations. Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis, who first released details of the sexual-harassment complaint, has called for replacing Rubin.

Miami Agency Luring Businesses out of Higher-Priced Cities Like Chicago

A carpetbagging development agency from Florida is lobbying Illinois businesses to move to the Miami area, using Illinois' proposed progressive income tax structure as a conversation piece.

Christina Crespi with the Miami Downtown Development Authority said her trip to Illinois in late June included talks with a number of financial firms in the state interested in a major city with lower taxes in a state with no income tax.

“A house here versus a house in Chicago would be double in income taxes,” she said.

Fifty years after the Apollo 11 lunar module Eagle descended on the moon, the nation --- and space freaks worldwide --- are celebrating Saturday’s anniversary of what was, according to Armstrong, “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”
