Rubio to State Department: Push Poland to Do Right by Victims of Nazis, Communists

Senate Foreign Relations Committeeman Marco Rubio, R-Fla., is calling on the U.S. State Department to support Poland to do more for those who lost their property to the Nazis and the communist regime that took over after World War II. 

Rubio paired up with U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wisc., to send a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on the matter, rounding up 86 other senators to sign as well.

New Opioid Law Causes Confusion for Doctors

Florida lawmakers passed far-reaching health care legislation this year, from trying to import drugs from other countries to regulating plastic-surgery centers.

But it’s another seemingly simple bill meant to prevent opioid abuse that is causing widespread confusion among physicians trying to figure out how to follow the law.

Staff members of the Florida Board of Medicine and physician organizations have been fielding questions from doctors about the broadly written bill, which was signed into law by Gov. Ron DeSantis in June.

Shevrin Jones Pushes Marijuana Decriminalization in Tallahassee

On Monday, a Democrat in the Florida Legislature filed a bill to decriminalize possessing 20 grams or less of marijuana in the Sunshine State. 

State Rep. Shevrin Jones, D-West Park, the deputy Democratic leader in the House, filed the bill. 

“We must restore justice to our broken criminal justice system,” Jones said. “For far too long, communities of color have been disproportionately impacted by laws governing marijuana, and we must end this injustice once and for all.” 

Ron DeSantis: Farmers Hit by Hurricane Michael Have Gotten $13 Million in Bridge Loans

On Monday, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the state government has awarded almost  $13 million on Florida Small Business Emergency Bridge Loan for agricultural producers in North Florida hit by Hurricane Michael back in October.  

DeSantis announced more than 70 applications have been approved from farmers in Bay, Calhoun, Franklin, Gadsden, Gulf, Holmes, Jackson, Jefferson, Leon, Liberty, Okaloosa, Wakulla, Walton and Washington Counties.

Court Puts Abortion Waiting Period Back in the Spotlight

In a victory for Republican state leaders and abortion opponents, a split appeals court Thursday overturned a circuit judge’s decision that tossed out a 2015 law requiring women to wait 24 hours before having abortions.

The 2-1 decision by a panel of the 1st District Court of Appeal sends the case back to Leon County circuit court. The 24-hour waiting period case could eventually become a key test for the Florida Supreme Court, which has historically backed abortion rights but is now dominated by conservative justices.

FAA Sending $22 Million to Help 10 Florida Airports

This week, as part of more than $475 million in infrastructure improvement grants to airports around the country, the U.S. Department of Transportation is sending almost $22 million to airports in the Sunshine State. 

U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao announced Wednesday the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will send funds to 10 airports in Florida. 

“This significant investment in airport improvements in Florida will fund construction and rehabilitation projects that will help maintain high levels of safety in U.S. aviation,” said Chao.
