In one of the post-season's most intriguing match-ups -- and the only college or pro football game on tap tonight -- the Stanford Cardinal and the Virginia Tech Hokies tee it up at 8:30 p.m. in the Orange Bowl. Stanford is led by junior Andrew Luck, who could be the first quarterback picked in the upcoming NFL draft. Tech is a 3.5-point underdog, having lost to both Boise State and James Madison to start the season. VaTech also sports a historic 1-26 record against top-five teams. (Its only win came against No. 3 Miami in Blacksburg in 2003.)

The Florida Alliance for Renewable Energy says alternative power sources hold the key for employment in the state. "In the November TaxWatch Survey, 80 percent of Floridians agreed that it is time for our Legislature to take action on renewable energy, and 70 percent of Floridians agreed that they would be willing to pay $1 or more per month in order to achieve renewable energy," said Mike Antheil, head of FARE.

A House ethics panel has halted its investigation into the use of travel funds by Rep. Alcee Hastings and five other congressmen. Citing unclear rules and a lack of evidence, investigators dropped their probe. Hastings, D-Miramar, used some of his travel stipend to purchase gifts. Hastings maintained that he complied with the rules, and told Sunshine State News last month that he would be cleared.

On Monday, Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele will debate four other candidates vying for his seat. Reince Preibus, the Wisconsin Republican Party chairman, Saul Anuzis, the Michigan Republican Party chairman, Ann Wagner, a former RNC co-chairman, and Maria Cino, a former Bush administration official, will take aim at Steele -- who many in the GOP believe was more of a hindrance than a help to the Party's success in the midterm elections.

In an opinion piece published in the Wall Street Journal Monday, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush says Florida's investment in reform is already paying off. But he isn't suggesting the state stop now; instead, he seems to be trying to build consensus for more reform, which is sure to be hard-fought in this year's legislative session. In his article, Bush cites two examples of reform measures that were widely opposed, but now have proven effective in improving school performance. He said some fought against giving schools a letter grade, A to F, based on their performance.

Just a few miles off the coast of Florida, China is reported to be investing $2.5 billion in a massive tourist complex near Nassau. China is demanding that the Bahamas issue work permits for 8,150 Chinese workers, who would constitute roughly three-quarters of the work force needed to construct the Baha Mar facility. The Center for Immigration Studies in Washington, D.C., takes a dim view of this latest Chinese export scheme, noting that the needed workers "could easily be drawn from the Bahamas labor pool."

If George LeMieux runs for U.S. Senate in 2012, he shouldn't expect any support from the National Council of La Raza. The Hispanic political group issued a warning to Republican lawmakers who voted against the DREAM Act, saying:

Gov. Charlie Crist offered his best wishes to Floridians for 2011 -- and offered a look back at his tenure in office. New Years Day is a time to celebrate with family and friends, and to look toward the coming year with great anticipation. It is also a time to reflect on the past year and be thankful for our many blessings, said Crist on Friday, before turning to reviewing his term in office.
