An off-election summer in the capital city usually provides a tempting opportunity for idle hands to pursue thrills in far-flung climes more palatable to the senses than Tallahassee's oppressive heat.

For the fortunate, this sweltering season was one like any other, full of indulgences in travel and esprit. But for others, the Florida Supreme Court put the kibosh on even Thurberish escapes, replacing fantasy with drudgery and casting a lugubrious pall over an already pudding-like ambiance.

Utility Relocation Legislation Deserves Another Shot

It has come to my attention that some cities have been expressing concern in reference to SB 896/HB "Road391, utility relocation legislation of the 2015 session, and its potential impact on our local governments. The bill is likely to return again in 2016.

Florida Supreme Court Sends Redistricting Case Back to Trial Court

The Florida Supreme Court told a state trial court to head back to square one with congressional redistricting, according to an order filed Friday. As part of the court order, the trial court will be able to look at both the House and Senate’s map proposals. Trial court Judge Terry Lewis will hold a hearing on "remedial plans" to see which one best meets the directions of the court. The trial court must make a decision on the map by Oct. 17.

Bill Nelson Under the Radar Once More as He Readies to Run Again

Plenty of senators in recent years called it quits when they were in their mid to late 70s. Not Bill Nelson as all signs indicate he will run for a fourth term in 2018. Nelson signaled once again at the end of August that he will run for a fourth term. In 2018, Nelson will be 76 but he shows no signs of slowing down.

Chief Justice to Undergo Cancer Surgery

Florida Supreme Court Chief Justice Jorge Labarga will undergo surgery this month for removal of a kidney after being diagnosed with cancer, the court announced Friday.

The announcement did not specify a date for the surgery at UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville, but Labarga is expected to be hospitalized for seven days. The announcement said he will start working remotely soon after surgery, with Barbara Pariente --- the court's longest-sitting member --- serving as acting chief justice during any time he is incapacitated.

Kathy Castor Announces USF Gets Largest Obamacare Navigator Grant in the Nation

On Thursday, U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor, D-Fla., announced the University of South Florida (USF) is getting the largest “navigator” grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to enroll Americans into President Barack Obama’s federal health-care insurance.

Mike Huckabee to Hold Rally in Kentucky in Support of Kim Davis

Former Gov. Mike Huckabee, R-Ark., announced he will hold a rally in Kentucky to support Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis who is now in jail after being held in contempt by a federal judge for refusing to issue same-sex marriage licenses despite a Supreme Court decision.
