As part of a series of reports from the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee covering the influence of Russia on the 2016 general election, the latest release has just been made public. This second report, of an expected five to be made in total, details primarily efforts made by Kremlin-backed entities to have an effect on the election via social media influence and astroturf activism.

USDA Expects Slight Rise in Florida Orange Production

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) released its crop forecast on Thursday and its outlook on oranges across the nation is “virtually unchanged” from last year, though Florida production is expected to rise slightly.

Mounting Pre-Filed Gun Bills Are More 2020 Campaign Statements than Actionable Legislation

Florida could become the 16th state to adopt “constitutional carry,” meaning no permit would be required to publicly carry a firearm, or lawmakers could impose more restrictions on concealed and open carry.

It could go either way during Florida’s 2020 legislative session, which begins Jan. 14. More likely, however, it goes neither way and everything stays the same.

Florida’s insurance commissioner is considering whether to sign off on an average 5.4 percent reduction in workers’ compensation insurance rates despite an ongoing debate about the effects of a state Supreme Court ruling that allowed higher attorney fees in workers’ compensation legal battles.

A 2016 ruling, in a case known as Castellanos v. Next Door Company, tossed out a restrictive cap on what attorneys for injured workers could be paid.

This week, U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis, R-Fla., and U.S. Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester, D-Del., paired up on a proposal ensuring the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) offers guidance to states when it comes to Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

Blunt Rochester introduced the “Collecting and Analyzing Resources Integral and Necessary for Guidance (CARING) for Social Determinants Act” on Tuesday and Bilirakis joined on as a cosponsor. They showcased the proposal on Wednesday with the congressman’s team offering insights on why he was backing it. 

Rutherford Sends Funds to Jacksonville Through His STOP School Violence Act

Last year, the U.S. House passed U.S. Rep. John Rutherford’s, R-Fla., “Student, Teachers, and Officers Preventing (STOP) School Violence Act” and now the congressman has directed some of the funds to help the First Coast. 

With U.S. Rep. Ted Deutch, D-Fla., as the main cosponsor, Rutherford got his bill through the House on a 407-10 vote last year.
