This week, U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Fla., who sits on the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee, showcased his support of renewable energy.
On Wednesday, Buchanan toured Florida Power and Light’s (FPL) solar plant in Parrish as that company continues its plans to build the world’s largest solar-powered battery.
“Once completed, the battery storage center will allow the utility company to collect electricity from its solar panels during the day and discharge it as needed during periods of high-power demand, even when the sun is not shining,” Buchanan’s office noted about the battery. “Set to begin serving customers in 2021, the energy storage project will provide four times the capacity of the world’s largest battery system currently in operation and is estimated to save consumers more than $100 million. This will also help accelerate the retirement of two existing fossil-fuel plants and eliminate more than one million tons of carbon dioxide emissions.”
“New technology like large-scale battery storage, is a critical step on the path to a cleaner and more efficient energy future,” Buchanan said. “This project will help the country move to energy independence and save money for consumers.”
Buchanan stressed his support of green energy including wind, solar and bio-diesel options, insisting they will bring jobs to Southwest Florida. The Manatee County Republican also showcased his support for renewable energy including expanding Investment Tax Credits (ITC) and other incentives, backing a proposed $2.25 billion in federal funds to expand solar technology and supporting higher fuel efficiency standards for new cars.
First elected to the U.S. House in 2006, Buchanan previously served on the Budget Committee. Buchanan’s name has garnered buzz as a possible U.S. Senate candidate in recent election cycles but he’s opted to continue in the House where he is one of the co-chairs of the Florida delegation. Buchanan is expected to be a target for Democrats next year and faces a challenge from state Rep. Margaret Good, D-Sarasota.
