This week, Florida Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran announced the latest stops in his Florida Standards Listening Tour, which will start in the coming days, giving the public another chance to weigh in on what should replace Common Core in the Sunshine State. 

When Gov. Ron DeSantis issued an executive order at the start of the year to eliminate Common Core in Florida, he also called on Corcoran to review and revise the standard by January 2020.

Next weekend, Oct. 11-13, the Florida Democratic Party is holding its annual state convention in Orlando. With an eye on the 2020 election and a swollen field of presidential candidates, this is poised to be an important and influential convention for the FDP. Maybe someone should have alerted the national party.

Gov. Ron DeSantis will be on hand when President Donald Trump visits friendly turf Thursday in The Villages, but two of the president’s other closest Florida allies won’t accompany him.

Republican Party of Florida Chairman Joe Gruters and Congressman Matt Gaetz have prior commitments and will not be able to attend the president’s event, which is happening in the midst of a U.S. House impeachment inquiry into the president.

Florida Republican Heads to Mt. Everest Hoping to Set a World Record

A prominent Florida Republican will be headed to Mount Everest later this month in an attempt to set a world record. 

Patriot Defense announced on Wednesday that businessman, former CIA agent and veteran Todd Wilcox, who founded the group and is its executive chairman, will take part in a Military Free Fall (MFF) expedition to Mount Everest. Wilcox will be part of the Complete Parachute Solutions (CPS) team as they try to set a world record for highest-elevation tactical military freefall parachute landing.

Buchanan's Bill Cracking Down on Wildlife Poaching Gains Traction on Capitol Hill

A Florida congressman’s bill giving the U.S. State Department more power to crack down on international wildlife traffickers is gaining momentum on Capitol Hill. 

Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Fla., was able to get his “Rescuing Animals With Rewards Act” (RAWR Act) through the House without opposition over the summer. 

After the Senate Foreign Relations Committee passed the companion bill from Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., Buchanan weighed in on the bill on Wednesday.

FDLE Wants More Money to Stop 'Homegrown Violent Extremists'

A project designed to detect “homegrown violent extremists and lone actors” before they attack is estimated to cost the Florida Department of Law Enforcement millions of dollars --- and agency officials want lawmakers to start paying for parts of it next year.

The agency is asking the Legislature for $3.6 million to support multiple parts of its “behavioral threat assessment” tool, which has been extolled by Gov. Ron DeSantis and Florida Department of Law Enforcement Commissioner Rick Swearingen.
