Raising the Minimum Wage Doesn’t Matter

July 18, 2016 - 2:15pm

Raising the minimum wage doesn’t matter. I can hear the screams now. “What do you mean it doesn’t matter? Fifteen dollars an hour is way better than seven.” Sure it is, but the conversation needs to be about a living wage and frankly, fifteen dollars an hour is not a living wage.

Florida Republicans gathering in Cleveland for the national party's convention heard a dire message to kick off the week: The presidential candidate they will officially nominate during the four-day meeting would lose the election right now.

"The first thing is, if the election were held today, Hillary Clinton wins," said Republican pollster Frank Luntz, who spoke Monday morning to a Florida GOP delegates' breakfast near Cleveland.

GOP Minds Are at Sea -- but Not the Right One

July 18, 2016 - 7:00am

Neither the unanimous decision by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, nor China's rejection of it, was surprising. The timing of it was, however, as serendipitous as China's rejection is ominous. Coming as Republican delegates convene on Lake Erie's shore, the tribunal's opinion about the South China Sea underscores the current frivolousness of American politics, which is fixated on a fictitious wall that will never exist but silent about realities on and above the waters that now are the world's most dangerous cockpit of national rivalries.

What Do You Think? Do You Predict Fireworks at the GOP Convention?

July 16, 2016 - 6:00am

Donald Trump received a major victory Thursday as delegates overwhelmingly opposed last-ditch efforts to derail his nomination.

In the wonky Rules Committee meeting in Cleveland ahead of the Republican National Convention next week, a whip team assembled by the Trump campaign worked closely with officials at the Republican National Convention to defeat anti-Trump delegates' efforts.

The RNC and Trump whip teams erupted into applause behind a sectioned-off portion of the cavernous hall when the committee adjourned, according to NBC News.

Weekly Roundup: In the Background for a Bit

Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton

When it came to news, it was hard for Florida to get a word in edgewise this week.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump selected Indiana Gov. Mike Pence as his running mate. There was a brutal terror attack in the French city of Nice. And on Friday, an attempted coup in Turkey threw into grave doubt the future of one of America's NATO allies.
