No (Political) Experience Required

April 14, 2010 - 6:00pm

WASHINGTON -- Stiffening their sinews and summoning up their blood, pugnacious liberals and conservatives who relish contemporary Washington's recurring Armageddons are eager for a summer-long struggle over Barack Obama's nominee to replace Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens. They should pause and ponder how recently and radically the confirmation process has changed.

Today often-left-behind St. Lucie County wasn't.

We know that there has been vocal opposition, but we want the governor to know teachers, educators, and business leaders support him and this good bill, said Marshall Criser, the chair of the Florida Council of 100s Pre-K-14 Education Committee.

Senators Draw A Line On Gerrymandering

The proposed constitutional amendment on redistricting could be getting some company.

GOP Senate leaders have directed staffers to draft an alternative proposal to the Fair Districts amendment on the November ballot.

Advocates for Fair Districts contend that the party in power -- currently the Republicans -- distort the redistricting process for partisan gain. The group wants to apply more objective standards to maintain community integrity and improve representation.

High-Speed Rail Not Such A Swift Deal For I-4 Corridor

Following today's Sunshine State News story on SunRail, a transportation analyst cites more discouraging numbers about the cost-benefit of high-speed rail (HSR) ventures.

"One of the rationales for both the California and Florida HSR projects is to relieve congestion on, respectively, I-5 and I-4, both of which are projected to need widening over the next decade or two," Robert Poole testified at the National Conference of State Legislatures in Washington, D.C.
