Meet Sen. Mike Bennett

April 11, 2010 - 6:00pm

Age: 66

Residence: Bradenton

Time in the Legislature: 10 years

Political Affiliation: Republican

Spouse: Dee

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

I don't want to grow up. I'm growing older, but I don't ever want to grow up.

What do you consider to be your biggest political achievement?

SB 218, which I sponsored and was signed into law in 2006 and provides a penalty for anyone willfully interrupting a veteran's funeral. (Sen. Bennett was in the Navy and served four tours in Vietnam).

What was your biggest political faux pas?

My signing onto the bill allowing the high-speed railroad. It's a waste of valuable dollars and there has never been a railroad that made money.

Who in state government do you most admire?

The late Sen. Jim King. He was an exceptional lawmaker, had great vision and a wonderful sense of humor.

Who in all the world do you most admire?

My wife, because she cares about everybody. I can't tell you how many organizations she belongs to that help people.

Who is your favorite lawmaker of the opposite party and why?

Sen. Al Lawson because of his leadership ability and his ability to bend to help the most people.

What do you remember as being your wackiest constituent request?

I had someone ask me to make all of Sarasota Bay a mantee-free zone.

What is your favorite place in the world?

The porch off my bedroom. I was raised in very poor and humble beginnings and have been blessed with what I have been able to achieve. When I walk out on that porch I can see all of Sarasota Bay and the lights from the city, and I'm thankful for everything I have. I do that every night when I'm home.

What is your least favorite household chore?

I really can't stand doing yard work.
