Crist: BP Finally Put $25 Million in State's Hands

Florida finally received the $25 million BP promised it would give to advertise that Floridas beaches are unsullied by oil, Gov. Charlie Crist announced Tuesday afternoon. The money came less than eight hours after the Cabinet and one senior senator slammed Crist for not doing enough to expedite receipt of the oil company's check.

With President Barack Obama looking to repeal the Dont Ask, Dont Tell Defense Department policy prohibiting homosexuals from coming out of the closet during their military service, U.S. Senate candidates in Florida are weighing in on the issue.

Greene Calls for a Series of Debates With Meek

Despite his lack of political experience, billionaire Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Jeff Greene feels confident enough in his abilities to challenge his chief rival, U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek, to a series of debates to be held every two weeks from here until the primary election on Aug. 24.

Greene took off the gloves in issuing the challenge.

NYT: Parents See Charter-School Difference in Their own Children

One of the biggest arguments teachers' unions all over the country have against breaking away from guaranteed tenure and evaluating teachers based partly on their students' performance is resources.

According to a New York Times article, the overriding philosophy is that hiring more teachers so that classrooms will be smaller makes the most difference.

Existing Home Prices Edge Up Again

The median price of a Florida home inched up 1 percent in April from a year ago as sales shot up 27 percent, according to figures released by Florida Realtors on Monday.

The median price of $140,100 was 2.3 percent higher than the median price in March, marking the second straight month of price increases, raising the prospect that the real estate market may be finally starting to head the other direction in price after two years of declining values.

TaxWatch Catches $60.6 million in 'Budget Turkeys'

Projects slipped into the budget late in the negotiation process or without adequate public review could gobble up nearly $60.7 million in the proposed $70.4 billion budget now on Gov. Charlie Crists desk.

And Florida TaxWatch, a nonprofit government watchdog, wants the governor to veto these "budget turkeys."

Lawmakers slipped 41 such turkeys into the budget this year, the pro-business nonprofit revealed Monday, and they are costing the state needed transportation funds and services for vulnerable Floridians.

NY Times Magazine: Are Teachers' Unions the Enemy of Reform?

In the May 23, 2010 edition of the New York Times Magazine, The Grey Lady questioned what it calls the base of the Democrat base -- teachers' unions -- and their effect on education reform.

In one of the story's images, you see the words, "Are Teachers' Unions the Enemy of Reform? Discuss" scrawled across a white board in the front of a classroom.

The 12-page article begins with a story about Michael Mulgrew, a Brooklyn vocational high school teacher who also serves as the head of New York City's United Federation of Teachers.

TaxWatch Flushes Out More Turkeys, and a Senator Fires Back

When lawmakers come up with a budget that spends more than Charlie Crist, you better believe there's some fat in it.

Sure enough, Florida TaxWatch has zeroed in on $60 million plump "turkeys" that deserve the ax.

While accounting for less than 0.1 percent of the $70.4 billion state spending plan, the turkeys are troubling because lawmakers backdoor them into the budget without the benefit of committee hearings or normal due process.
