Republicans are encountering some speed bumps on what they hope is the road to victory in the November elections. Their candidates for Republican open Senate seats in Ohio and Missouri are running no better than even in recent polls. The independent candidacy of Gov. Charlie Crist is threatening Marco Rubio's bid to hold the Republican Senate seat in Florida.

Gulf Coast Tax Breaks Another Special Session

Tax breaks for Gulf coast property owners could be part of the mix in a proposed special session sparked by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill which Gov. Charlie Crist is looking to call as early as next month.

Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink pushed Crist to embrace the tax reduction plan Tuesday as the governor and Cabinet heard presentations from BP along with state environmental, wildlife and revenue officials about the effects of the massive spill.

BP Oil Not Detected in Loop Current

University of South Florida scientists say they've detected "very low levels" of oil about 142 nautical miles southeast of the Deepwater Horizon wellhead, but it's not from BP.

Attorney General Bill McCollums gubernatorial campaign team is ripping into Rick Scott who is also running for the Republican nomination.

With the Scott campaign sending out campaign mail describing their candidate as a pro-life leader, Matt Williams, McCollums campaign manager, blasted Scotts conservative credentials on abortion.

Move Over BP, There's a New Whipping Boy in Florida

Delays in the compilation and release of FCAT results have Florida Education Commissioner Eric Smith hopping mad.

The lack of performance by the states new testing contractor, NCS Pearson, is absolutely unacceptable, and the delays we have encountered in the reporting of this years FCAT results are not indicative of the smooth, expertly-managed experience they promised as a part of the contract procurement process," Smith said today in a statement.

British Petroleum Senior Vice President Bob Fryar tried to soothe frustrated members of the Florida Cabinet Tuesday with the promise of a new $25 million check for the state.

Florida PBA Backs Ausley for CFO

Former Rep. Loranne Ausley, the front-runner for the Democratic state CFO nomination, just announced that she is being backed by the Florida Police Benevolent Association (PBA), a group with more than 36,000 members across the state.

Republicans Urging Crist to Support Ultrasound Measure

Leaders of the Republican Party are urging Gov. Charlie Crist not to veto the measure currently before him requiring women in Florida considering having an abortion in the first trimester to have an ultrasound.

Lt. Gov. Jeff Kottkamp, who is running for the GOP attorney general nomination, sent Crist a letter urging him to support the measure. Giving the expecting mother the option of looking at an ultrasound of her unborn child will be incredibly important, wrote Kottkamp, noting that he had seen his son through an ultrasound.
