In Last Minute Push for Cash, Dem CFO Candidate Loranne Ausley Says She is Close to Jeff Atwater in Polls


Former Rep. Loranne Ausley, the Democratic nominee for CFO, sent out an e-mail on Tuesday, trying to round up some donors in the last days before the deadline on Friday for campaign financial reports. In it, Ausley wrote that her internal polling found her just behind Senate President Jeff Atwater, R-North Palm Beach, the Republican nominee.

Yankee Boss George Steinbrenner Dies at His Tampa Home

George Steinbrenner, a "Yankee" who Floridians actually liked, passed away this morning at his Tampa home.

Felled by a massive heart attack, the 80-year-old baseball owner, businessman and philanthropist left a large legacy.

Like Henry Flagler, another Ohio-based captain of industry, Steinbrenner left Cleveland for Florida to pursue business opportunities in sunnier climes.

Thirty-five years later, Steinbrenner had parlayed the family's shipbuilding business and helped build his adopted hometown of Tampa.

Former House Speaker Marco Rubio, the likely Republican candidate in the U.S. Senate race, unveiled a new Web video on Tuesday morning. He also announced, in an address in Tampa later in the day, that he would initiate a new phase of his campaign -- unveiling policies and ideas that he says will help jump-start the economy and make the federal government more effective.

David Rivera Wins Straw Poll and Collier County GOP Endorsement


Rep. David Rivera, R-Miami, the front-runner for the Republican nomination in the race to replace U.S. Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart won a straw poll and gained an endorsement on Monday.

Diaz-Balart currently holds the seat in the 25th Congressional District which he is vacating to run for the seat currently held by his brother, U.S. Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart. The district stretches across the southern part of the state, taking in parts of Collier, Miami-Dade and Monroe counties.

Battle to Replace Mario-Diaz Balart Heating Up

Rep. David Rivera, R-Miami, the front-runner for the Republican nomination in the race to replace U.S. Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, won a straw poll and gained an endorsement Monday while Democratic rival Joe Garcia announced his campaign reeled in more than $700,000 in the second quarter of 2010.

Floridian Rush Limbaugh Exports More Loot From New York City

Rush Limbaugh solidified his Palm Beach "Southern Command" by selling his New York penthouse.

The Wall Street Journal reported that "El Rushbo" severed one more link to the Empire State with the sale of his 10-room condo facing Central Park. A broker was quoted as saying the sale price was $11.5 million -- about $6 million more than Limbaugh paid in 1994.

Citing high taxes, Limbaugh vowed last year to bail out of the Big Apple and maintain his year-round residence in Palm Beach, where he broadcasts his top-rated national radio program.

Senate Looking to Expand Special Session

A week before the Legislature goes into special session, there was little agreement on just what oil-related items it plans to take up, though it became clear Monday that the Senate, at least, wants to go beyond the governors call and provide economic relief to the spill-weary Panhandle.

The Senates Select Committee on the Economy on Monday discussed a list of economic issues lawmakers should address when the Legislature convenes a special session ordered by Gov. Charlie Crist to vote on a proposed state constitutional amendment to ban offshore oil drilling in Florida.
