Some Teachers Speak Out Against Tenure, For Performance-Based Pay
Bills in the House and Senate that would eliminate teacher tenure and reward better teachers are gaining support -- not only among the Republican-dominated House and Senate, but among teachers themselves.
Rhonda Lochiatt, a fifth-grade teacher from Volusia County, says she's excited about the Senate passage of the Student Success Act and the promising path of its counterpart in the House.
"Teachers have always wanted to be treated as professionals and this is finally our chance," said Lochiatt. "For me, this is the direction we need to go."

Protests continue, but Gov. Scott Walker and the Wisconsin GOP on Thursday prevailed against the wearying weeks-long combination of heavy union pressure and a Democratic walkout in the state Senate.
The Assembly voted 53-42 to approve a bill that sharply slashes bargaining rights for government workers. The bill moved like lightning to a relieved Walker, who promised to sign it as soon as he's able.

Gus Bilirakis: Terrorists Using Internet for Recruiting
Florida Republican U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis warned on Thursday that the Internet ranks as part of the front lines of the war on terror.
"Terrorist organizations have become increasingly adept at using the Internet and social media to recruit, inspire, and motivate individuals already in the United States to carry out attacks on their behalf," Bilirakis said at a hearing held by the Committee on Homeland Security. "We must combat the use of the Internet and other technology by terrorist organizations to inspire and encourage attacks by those who are already here.
