Finally: Florida House, Senate Ready to Conference on Budget, Other Matters
After reaching an agreement on general appropriations earlier in the day, Senate President Mike Haridopolos and House Speaker Dean Cannon late Tuesday named budget conferees who will spend the next week putting final touches on the state budget.
While there certainly had been tension between the chambers in recent days, the two leaders were all smiles and, in the opening moments of the House session on Tuesday, Haridopolos made a guest appearance to thank House members for their work on the budget.
Make or Break Time for Bills as Session Winds Down
A legislative session that began with all of the hope of spring training has now arrived at crunch time, as bills that appeared to have early momentum may fall victim to the tight schedule of the last two weeks.
Tuesday was the last day for regularly scheduled committee meetings, but legislators can still get bills through the Senate Rules Committee, which is allowed to meet after the deadline. The Senate Budget Committee will also meet Thursday, but the slate of bills to be taken up during the meeting was not available Tuesday evening.
Haridopolos Hangs With Migrants; Senate Set to Cave on Immigration?
The ad-hoc meetings between Florida Senate leaders and immigrants continued Tuesday, and the surreal sessions aren't playing well with border-control groups.
Noting reports that some 50 people packed the office of Senate President Mike Haridopolos Tuesday morning to ask him to halt proposed bills cracking down on illegal immigration, conservative activist George Fuller commented: "WTF," and offered a bit of advice to law-abiding citizens.
