Gadsden County Looks to Bring Tourists With New Website

On Thursday, the Gadsden County Tourism Development Council (TDC) unveiled a new website touting the Panhandle countys attractions and events.

I am really proud of eGadsden.com, because it gives tourists a simple place to go online and find everything they need for visiting Gadsden, said Jeff DuBree, chairman of the TDC. It is updated constantly with new events or places to visit, so theres always new things to experience.

Rep. Allen West Demands Retraction of 'Inaccurate' Town Hall Coverage

Rep. Allen West is disputing the account by a left-wing website, ThinkProgress, that the congressman "pre-screened" questions at his town hall meetings this week.

After a small group of protesters tried to disrupt a meeting in Fort Lauderdale on Tuesday, a more civil gathering was conducted in Boca Raton on Wednesday evening.

The Catholic Church and the Florida House

During the lengthy House session on Wednesday, as the legislators grappled with abortion bills and the Blaine Amendment, Rep. Michelle Rehwinkel Vasilinda, D-Tallahassee, arose during debate and mentioned her unhappiness that the Catholic Church --with which, according to her House webpage, she is affiliated -- has largely downplayed social justice issues in favor of opposition to abortion.

Going Nowhere: Florida House Waits While Senate Stalls on Immigration

The Florida House reportedly is ready to pass its tough immigration bill, but is waiting for the Senate to get its act together first.

Rep. Bill Snyder, R-Stuart, told the News Service of Florida that the House wants to see what the upper chamber will do on Senate Bill 2040. That E-Verify bill has stalled in the Budget Committee.

Snyder said the House won't bother to debate his tougher enforcement and E-Verify bill (HB 7089) if the Senate isn't going to pass a bill.

AIF Endorses Republican Mike Hogan for Mayor of Jacksonville

One of the state's most powerful business organizations, Associated Industries of Florida, announced Thursday it has endorsed the former Florida legislator, Republican Mike Hogan, for mayor of Jacksonville.

AIF represents more than 10,000 members of the states business community, and its endorsement of Hogan is significant considering Jacksonville is where AIF was founded 91 years ago -- and where it still has a strong presence.

Health and Human Services Budget Negotiations Begin

With hundreds of millions of dollars riding on their decisions, House and Senate negotiators remained sharply divided Wednesday about how to balance the health and human services budget.

The House and Senate exchanged proposals that included major differences on Medicaid payment rates for hospitals, nursing homes and physicians. Also, they split on issues such as the Medically Needy program, biomedical research and mental-health and substance-abuse treatment.
