Tom Rooney Wants Feds to Help Vets Fighting Drug Abuse and PTSD

Florida Republican U.S. Rep. Tom Rooney, a member of the House Armed Services Committee and a veteran of the Army who taught at West Point, went to bat on Thursday for veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and drug abuse by proposing amendments to be tacked onto the National Defense Authorization Act for the 2012 fiscal year.

Video: Anti-Rick Scott Protest Goes to Pot in Jacksonville

The hard-working lefties in Jacksonville hit the bricks this week to chant anti-Rick Scott slogans and carry a few placards. For their efforts, the motley crew drew no visible reaction from passers-by.

As shown in this video, the demonstrators looked more like shiftless street people, with one protester taking time away from the front lines to smoke a joint.

Touted by conservatives and constitutionalists as a tool to restore the balance of national and state governments, the amendment would enable states to repeal any federal law or regulation when two-thirds of the states agree.

Mitt Romney of Massachusetts, one of the front-runners for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008, looked to downplay his own record on health-care legislation and called for repeal of the federal health-care law backed by President Barack Obama. During Romneys term as governor of the Bay State, he signed a health-care law mandating that state residents have insurance.

Vendor Cash Greased Way for Red-Light Cameras

Red-light cameras survived a close call in the Florida Legislature, thanks in part to big contributions from one of the major vendors of the technology.

Just a year after the state approved use of the controversial cameras, lawmakers attempted to yank them down. The House narrowly approved a camera ban, 59-57, but the bill (HB 4087) never got a hearing in the Senate.

The Senate's own version, SB 672, stalled in Sen. Mike Bennett's Community Affairs Committee and died there.

Political consultant Doug Guetzloe was ordered to begin serving a 60-day jail sentence Wednesday, the final act in a long-running legal saga.

Orange County Circuit Judge C. Jeffery Arnold's order came a month after Guetzloe's latest petition to the Florida Supreme Court was denied.
