Why Closing the Gun Show Loophole Won’t Stop Criminals or Gang Members

April 9, 2018 - 10:00pm

The Leon County Commission is scheduled to conduct a public hearing Tuesday night to discuss a proposed gun show loophole ordinance pushed by Commissioner Mary Ann Lindley.

I’ve known Mary Ann for years and when she last suggested this bad idea, I called her, and she later withdrew the proposal.

Why is this idea wrong-headed and counter-productive?

Because it feeds into the unwarranted belief that it will do something about gun violence.

The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student, badly wounded while saving the lives of classmates, has blamed the Valentine's Day mass shooting on the sheriff and the school district. He says confessed gunman Nikolas Cruz should have been kicked out long before the deadly rampage.

Through his Win Back Your State PAC, O’Malley went to bat for Fernandez on Friday, calling on Democrats to support the candidate.

Florida Republican Leaders: We Can Crash the Blue Wave

April 7, 2018 - 7:00pm

Florida Republican leaders who gathered this weekend in Tampa believe they can hold back a Democratic wave in November to keep the “Trump agenda alive.”

But to retain congressional and legislative majorities and to unseat Democratic U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, that means ramping up messaging about economic growth, boosting turnout, particularly among voters who request absentee ballots, and countering what the GOP describes as “mainstream media” narratives of looming Democratic victories.

Weekly Roundup: Obscure, but Powerful

April 6, 2018 - 10:00pm

It’s almost showtime for the Florida Constitution Revision Commission, a somewhat-obscure but powerful group that can have a major impact on the state’s future.

The commission is obscure in the sense that it meets only every 20 years. But it is very powerful in its unique authority to place proposed constitutional changes before voters on the November ballot.
