Tri-Rail Accuses State, FEC of Attempting a 'Corporate Takeover'

The chair of the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority on Friday lambasted the state for attempting a "corporate takeover" of the Tri-Rail commuter system.

Kristin Jacobs said she was "astounded" to hear a state Department of Transportation official claim that the Florida East Coast Railway could cut $10 million a year from the operating budget of the three-county passenger line.

"How does the state rely on FEC when the FEC has no experience with passenger rail?" Jacobs asked.

Russian Rocket Crash Deals a Blow to U.S. Space Strategy

America's presence in space took another leap backward when a Russian rocket bound for the International Space Station went down shortly after launch.

The unmanned vehicle, carrying 2 1/2 tons of supplies, broke up and crashed back to Earth last week. It was the first mission to the ISS since the United States retired its space shuttle program last month.

"This is exactly why I offered legislation to keep the shuttle flying," said U.S. Rep. Bill Posey, R-Rockledge. "With the Russians, we have no backup plan."

Step Aside, George Soros -- MoveOn Milks a New Cash Cow (Rick Scott)

Flailing at "right-wing extremists," the left-wing extremists at MoveOn.org are using Gov. Rick Scott to raise money.

In an e-mail campaign, lightly customized for Florida, the George Soros organization is soliciting $5 monthly donations, ostensibly to "fight Rick Scott."

"With so much at stake, we've launched a major effort to bring MoveOn's grassroots muscle and Internet organizing to state capitols all across the country," the solicitation reads.

Fans of Florida Football, Share a Little Sunshine

Here's a great opportunity for Facebook fans of Florida football to pitch in and give state tourism efforts a boost.

Visit Florida, the Sunshine State's tourism arm, is kicking off The Florida Fan Game Sept. 2. It's a good one -- a contest between the fans of six state schools:Florida, Florida State, Miami, South Florida, Central Florida and Florida A&M.
