PSC Chairman Urges Caution on Expensive Renewable-Fuel Programs

Pointing to tough economic times for consumers, the chairman of the Florida Public Service Commission cautioned Tuesday about being "overly aggressive" in adding renewable energy.

Art Graham told a House panel he thinks the state needs to move forward with renewable energy, which could include sources such as solar power and biomass, but that people do not want to pay higher utility bills now.

"It's a great thing,'' Graham said. "Florida needs to get there.But it's costly.''

Citizens Property Insurance Corp. has no choice but to accept the states vast reduction in the rate increase requested for sinkhole coverage for now, while hoping to return with better numbers in July.

The state Office of Insurance Regulation late Monday night lowered the requested sinkhole rate request for Citizens from an average of 447 percent to 32.8 percent, declaring Citizens failed to provide enough credible data under Senate Bill 408, which passed last session, to justify the full increase at this time.

"There may be positive effects on FTC Scholarship Program participants in terms of reading and mathematics test-score gains," reports Northwestern University researcher David Figlio.

Perry will compete in a straw poll on Saturday that two of his chief rivals -- U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota and former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts -- have downplayed.

Gov. Rick Perry of Texas announced his leadership team for the Republican Party of Floridas (RPOF) Presidency 5 (P5) event in Orlando later this week, which includes some of the heavy hitters in Florida politics. Perry will be taking part in a straw poll at P5 on Saturday.

Perry announced that Florida House Speaker Dean Cannon, R-Winter Park, would serve as a chairman of his efforts in the Sunshine State along with a host of Republican officials and conservative leaders as co-chairmen.

Mike Haridopolos 'At Peace' With Potential Impact of Early Primary

Florida Senate President Mike Haridopolos is at peace with the idea that Florida may have to exchange delegates at the national convention for having an early primary.

Id much rather have a say in who the nominee (is) as opposed to just coronating the winner at the convention, said Haridopolos. There really hasnt been a convention that really picked a president in a long, long time.
