Carroll, Holly Petraeus to Discuss Military Finances at Mayport

Lt. Governor Jennifer Carroll will attend a pair of town hall-style meetings at the Mayport Naval Station in Jacksonville today with Holly Petraeus, the assistant director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and wife of CIA Director David Petraeus.

The meetings, at 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., are part of Carrolls effort to see that military families receive strong financial education, the lieutenant governor's office stated in a release.

Oba Chandler Execution Set for this Afternoon in Raiford

Pending any last-minute delays, which are not expected, Oba Chandlers 17-year stay on Floridas death row ends this afternoon.

Chandler, 65, is scheduled to die by lethal injection today at 4 p.m. at Florida State Prison in Raiford.

Gov. Rick Scott has already signed the death warrant and the Florida Supreme Court on Nov. 7 unanimously reaffirmed the death penalty for Chandler.

Rick Scott Cheers Supreme Court for Hearing Health-Care Challenge

Gov. Rick Scott issued a statement late on Monday with his thoughts on the U.S. Supreme Court announcing it would hear the constitutional challenge launched by 26 states and the NFIB against the federal health-care law backed by President Barack Obama.

Ron Paul, Cain, Gingrich, Perry and Romney Attacked by Bachmann

Sinking in the polls at the national level and in Iowa, where she has pinned much of her presidential hopes, U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota went on the attack on Tuesday. Bachmann released a new Web video which attacks the conservative credentials of the leading candidates for the Republican presidential nomination: Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul, Rick Perry and Mitt Romney. Bachmann also unveiled a new website on Tuesday which highlights her record and contrasts it with her primary rivals.

Universities Pressing for More Market-Rate Tuition Structures

Desperate for money after years of budget cuts from the state, universities are increasingly turning to out-of-state and online students to bring in more revenue.

Through a pilot market-rate tuition program, universities are able to charge different tuition rates for online and continuing education master's degrees and certificate programs. In most cases, this means a higher tuition rate than what was charged before. Money from this tuition is used to help support other college or university programs.

Senate Working to Change 2012 Property-Tax Amendment

Senators want to change the super exemption tax breaks offered first-time home buyers, and seasonal or second home owners, in a referendum already approved to go before voters next November.

Seeking to pump life into Floridas anemic real estate market by making Floridas property tax structure more equitable, Sen. David Simmons, R-Altamonte Springs, has proposed legislators replace the language in Amendment 4 that was approved for the ballot in the spring.
