Connie Mack's Team Claims Fundraising Victory

U.S. Rep. Connie Macks team is having a good week. Besides leading the GOP primary field in a poll from Quinnipiac University released on Wednesday, Macks team did a very solid job of managing -- and exceeding -- fundraising expectations for the last quarter of 2011.

Jeff Cohen, the campaign manager of Macks bid for the Republican nomination to challenge Democrat U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, sent out an email to supporters on Thursday in which he noted the campaign brought in more than $758,000 and had almost $918,000 in the bank.

Committee Gives Support to Texting Ban as a Secondary Offense

A bill to ban texting while driving received favorable but not unanimous support Thursday morning from the Senate Committee on Communications, Energy, and Public Utilities.

Texting itself wouldnt be enough of an offense for a motorist to be pulled over, but a ticket would be issued as a secondary offense if law enforcement sees the driver texting or reading texts while committing another offense, such as speeding or reckless driving.

Under the bill,a motorist could still check texts while the car is idling.

Newt Gingrich Raises the Stakes in South Carolina

Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich is putting his final chips on South Carolina. The Republican presidential hopeful will be focusing on campaigning in Columbia on Thursday as he looks to derail former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts in the Palmetto State. Gingrich will be joined by former U.S. Rep. J. C. Watts of Oklahoma at a rally in Columbia on Thursday.

In the meantime the Gingrich camp is not backing off on stressing how important the Palmetto State is for them.

Browning Resigns, Again, as Secretary of State

Secretary of State Kurt Brownings second resignation was accepted Wednesday by Gov. Rick Scott.

After a great deal of thought over the holiday, I have decided that it is in the best interest of my family that I would return to Pasco County, Browning stated in his resignation letter.

Browning said there was no pressure from the governor's office.

House Subcommittee Not Showing its Cards on Casino Bill

Destination gaming could face a quick end in the House after the first committee workshop on the controversial proposal to set up a statewide gaming commission and allow three casino resorts.

Members of the House Business and Consumer Affairs Subcommittee gave no direction on how to proceed with the bill after nearly two hours of comments and presentations from gaming interests and opponents on Wednesday.

Subcommittee Chairman Rep. Doug Holder, R-Sarasota, who said he hasnt personally made a decision on the bill, called the meeting educational for those on the committee.

New Budget Forecast Could Help Determine Length of Session

State revenue forecasters will meet Thursday to come up with a new estimate that could shape both the size of the budget for the coming fiscal year and the length of the legislative session.

Republican leaders in the House and Senate are still divided over whether the length of the session is a closed matter. Senate President Mike Haridopolos, R-Merritt Island, has repeatedly and publicly raised questions about whether lawmakers should rely on January prognostications about the economy or wait a while for more information.

Committee Backs Bill to End Fee to be on Florida's Do Not Call List

The fee to be included on the states Do Not Call list may be transferred to those who call those on the list.

The House Business and Consumer Affairs Subcommittee supported HB 749, sponsored by Rep. Dana Young, R-Tampa, which includes a provision that would end the required $10 initial fee and $5 annual renewal to have residential phones on the Florida Do Not Call list that is operated out of the Division of Consumer Services.

Florida Aims Anti-Racketeering Bill at Human Traffickers, Sex Trade

Florida, a key cog in an expanding global human-trafficking network, is looking to crack down on the $42.5 billion industry, starting with a vote on anti-racketeering legislation Thursday.

Arally in Tallahassee on Wednesday marked a "Day of Awareness" in the fight against domestic human trafficking, whose criminal enterprises range from sexual slavery to organ harvesting.
