George Zimmerman Charged with Murder in Death of Trayvon Martin

Duval County State Attorney Angela Corey announced Wednesday that neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman will be charged with second-degree murder in the Feb. 26 shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in Sanford.

Zimmerman, 28, claimed he acted in self-defense under the states Stand Your Ground law in what escalated into a nationwide racially charged case.

Charters Outscore Traditional Public Schools, State Report Says

A state Department of Education study reported Wednesday that charter schools are outperforming regular public schools.

Comparing FCAT data, the annual survey found that charter students scored better across the board last year.

This report clearly demonstrates that charter schools are a viable option for parents, said Education Commissioner Gerard Robinson. Charter schools offer a wide range of educational environments to meet the needs of students and their families.

CNN: George Zimmerman Will Be Charged in Trayvon Martin's Death

CNN is reporting that George Zimmerman, who shot and killed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin on Feb. 26, will be charged in the teen's death.

A special prosecutor in the Trayvon Martin shooting case is expected to announce a decision within the next four hours regarding whether she will file charges against George Zimmerman, the network reported.

The report did not state what charges Zimmerman would face.

Zimmerman has claimed he acted in self-defense under the state's Stand Your Ground law.

Democrat Urges Rick Scott to Ignore 'Washed-Up' Comedian

A day after former "Saturday Night Live" comedian-turned-activist Victoria Jackson joined conservative opponents of Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnams energy bill, House Democratic ranking member Jeff Clemens, D-Lake Worth, urged Gov. Rick Scott to sign the bill, HB 7117.

I am 100-percent positive that Governor Scott will look to someone a lot more qualified than a washed-up comedian for advice on Floridas energy future, Clemens stated in a release.

AIF: 2012 Legislature Most Business Friendly since 2008

Associated Industries of Florida has graded the Republican-dominated 2012 Legislature as the most friendly to business since 2008.

The business lobbying organization gave the GOP members an average score of 89 in the House and 85 in the Senate, based on more than 13,200 votes cast on 114 business-related bills.

Manatee County to Pursue Legal Action over State's Medicaid Bill

Manatee County will sue or join a lawsuit against the state of Florida over the controversial Medicaid bill, HB 5301, that will require counties to pay more into Medicaid, including 85 percent of what the state claims are years of unpaid bills.

Manatee County owes about $4 million in back Medicaid fees.

Manatee County commissioners voted 6-0 on Tuesday to pursue legal action, according to the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.
