Court: School Lawsuit Can Go Forward

A trial court will decide whether state lawmakers are adequately funding public education after the Florida Supreme Court turned aside a last-ditch effort by Senate President Mike Haridopolos to block the suit.

The Supreme Court's decision Tuesday largely hinged on a procedural issue. In November, the 1st District Court of Appeal issued a divided ruling, with eight judges voting to allow the case to go forward, though one of the judges differed with the other seven on the basis for that ruling. The other seven judges said the lawsuit should end.

The governors office is looking into a $20 million business deal pushed by former Gov. Charlie Crist for a leading visual effects company that on Tuesday filed for voluntary bankruptcy protection.

Meanwhile, the state Department of Economic Opportunity wants the money back.

Roberti N. Sachen, the general counsel for the DEO, sent a demand letter on Tuesday to Digital Domain Media Group, informing the company the state is listed as a creditor in the bankruptcy case as the company has failed to advise the state of any changes to the grant.

Florida Corrections Crackdown Nets 28 Probation Violators

A surprise round of contact between a strike force of law enforcement agencies in nine counties and hundreds of probationers resulted in 28 arrests, the Florida Department of Corrections announced Tuesday.

Arrests and the closure of drug manufacturing labs were made in Brevard, Lake, Marion, Martin, St. Lucie, and Seminole counties during the 14th such sweep since the Community Justice Coalition was created in 2007.

As Floridas Joint Legislative Budget Commission (LBC) prepares to meet Wednesday to consider a proposal to privatize prison health services, an attorney representing public-sector unions vows the state should be prepared for another lawsuit if approval of the proposal is forthcoming.

Well be moving promptly, said attorney Tom Brooks, one of the lawyers representing the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), at a press conference Tuesday morning. The [Department of Corrections] actions will be challenged.

BREAKING -- Union Lawyers: Florida Prison Health Privatization 'Will Be Challenged Promptly' in Court

At approximately 10:20 a.m. Tuesday, attorney Tom Brooks, who is representing theAmerican Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), said in a press conference that Florida's privatization of its prison health services "will be challenged" in court should the state's Joint Legislative Budget Commission (JLBC) approve the proposal by the Department of Corrections later this week. He said their challenge would be filed "promptly."
