Gov. Rick Scott has promoted Jeffrey Smith to the position of Indian River County clerk of the court as Jeffrey Barton has resigned six months before the end of his term.
Barton, who was due to be replaced by Smith in January, told TCPalm.com that he fired himself as a means to keep five employees from being laid off.

Gov. Rick Scott has named three -- Carly Lambert, Bonnie Lee Polk and William Robinson -- to the 12th Circuit Judicial Nominating Commission.
Lambert, 31, of Parrish, has practiced with Price Hamilton Price Chartered since 2011. She succeeds W. Earl Varn and is appointed for a term beginning Sept. 26, 2012, and ending July 1, 2016.

Gov. Rick Scott will be at a fish hatchery in the Central Florida community of Webster on Thursday for his 13th Lets Get to Work day.
Scott is scheduled to be at Richloam Fish Hatchery, a state-of-the-art facility that produces more than 2 million fish each year to stock Floridas public waters, at 9 a.m., according to a release from the governors office.
Scott is to collect fish from outdoor ponds with biologists and performing lab work.

The office of Attorney General Pam Bondi has frozen the assets of a company that allegedly preyed on distressed homeowners through a mortgage relief scam.
The temporary injunction, issued Wednesday in Broward County circuit court, alleges Edward Cherry, Lawrence Diodato, Paul Gellenbeck, Shane Frankovic, Anthony C. Pintsopoulos and their numerous businesses charged homeowners $3,500 in upfront fees in exchange for a guaranteed reversal of the homeowners upside-down mortgage.
