Democrat’s Bill Ties Teacher Merit Pay to Common Core Standards


State Rep. Mike Clelland, D-Lake Mary, has filed a bill, House Bill 377, to delay until the 2016-2017 school year implementation of the 2011 merit pay law for teachers that was linked to the FCAT test scores.

Clellands bill ties the law to new Common Core Standards that are being implemented in place of the FCATs.

Additional State Worker Pension Changes in Hands of Ongoing House Study

The state is moving to replace the pension plan that employees have only had to chip into for the past year with an investment-based retirement plan that would be based more on employee contributions.

Only future employees, those hired after Jan. 1, 2014, would be required to participate in the new investment plan, similar to a 401(k) retirement plan, as currently drafted.

Rick Scott Adds Gainesville High Visit in Call to Hike Teacher Pay

Gov. Rick Scott has added a visit to Gainesville High School this morning to announce his call to boost teacher pay by $2,500 across-the-board in Florida.

Scott announced the planned funding hike will be part of his legislative agenda for the 2013 session on Wednesday at Ocoee Middle School and will repeat the call this afternoon at Twin Lakes Elementary School in Tampa,

Scott will release his agenda for the session next week.

Freshman Rep. Mike Clelland Files Two Bills to Hold Elected Officials to Higher Ethical Standards

Freshman state Rep. Mike Clelland, D-Lake Mary, has filed two bills, aimed atproviding stronger public protections against corruption and legislative profiteering:

HB 381 wouldallow for more public involvement in filing valid complaints and expands the scope of the Commission on Ethics, while also protecting the privacy of those who the Commission finds are innocent of wrongdoing.

Florida Council of 100 Backs $2,500 Plan for Teachers


The Florida Council of 100 commended Gov. Rick Scotts proposal to increase the pay of full-time teachers $2,500 in the next fiscal year.

Having a quality teacher in every classroom is key to student learning, Marshall Criser III, chair of the Council of 100, stated in a release.

Cabinet Approves Everglades Sugar Leases

The governor and Cabinet on Wednesday granted 30-year leases to a pair of sugar growers over the objections of environmental groups that urged the panel to approve much shorter terms for the tracts that drain into the Everglades.

By unanimous vote, the panel approved the renewal of leases for Florida Crystals and A. Duda and Sons on separate tracts totaling more than 13,000 acres in the Everglades Agricultural Area. In exchange the companies have agreed to sell parcels that water management district officials say they need now.
