Lobbying Ban Expansion Won’t Impact Current Legislature

The proposed sweeping ethics changes that would expand the prohibition on legislators lobbying for the first two years out of office wont take effect until after the 2014 election.

The Senate Rules Committee agreed to set the lobbying ban timeline on Tuesday as they advanced, with little debate, the ethic reform package that may be one of the first pieces of legislation voted on by the entire Senate when the regular session begins March 5.

Carlos Trujillo Files House Companion for ‘Parent Trigger’


Rep. Carlos Trujillo, R-Miami, has filed the House version of the Parent Empowerment in Education, better known as the parent trigger, that was narrowly defeated in the Senate last year.

Pam Bondi Scores Multimillion-Dollar Settlement with Law Book Publisher over Subscription Renewals

Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi has announced that her office has entered a multimillion-dollar settlement with CCH Inc., a law book publisher, over allegations of automatic subscription renewals, a practice referred to as a negative option plan, without adequate disclosures. CCH will mail approximately 5,000 consumers refund notices and provide a total refund amount up to $5 million to the consumers. The attorney generals office will receive $1.4 million for investigative costs, attorney fees and future enforcement efforts.

Major League Soccer Scores in Committee, But It's Early

A bill that could help two Florida cities attract Major League Soccer took home a clean-sheet victory in its first appearance before a Senate committee a day after Orlandos efforts to field a team moved up, thanks to the addition of a Brazilian financial backer.

The Senate Commerce and Tourism Committee on Tuesday handed an 11-0 vote in support of Senate Bill 358, which would allow teams seeking to build stadiums in Jacksonville and Orlando to be eligible for about $2 million a year for 30 years in local sales tax assistance.

Heavy Hitters could Spill more Campaign Cash as Supreme Court Takes Up Contribution-Limit Challenge

The Supreme Court said Tuesday it will take up a campaign-finance case challenging limits on how much individual donors may give in political donations.

The high court will take up McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission to decide whether restrictions on total contributions are constitutional, according to Politico.

Also this morning, a bill that these same conservatives are keeping a supportive eye on has been approved by the Senate Criminal Justice Committee, its final stop before heading to the full Senate floor for an up or down vote.
