DOC Deficit Balloons; Now $95 Million in the Red

The cost of downsizing and consolidating Florida's prison system cost at least $15 million more than expected this year and the Department of Corrections continues to operate in the red, the state's prisons secretary told lawmakers Wednesday.

Deficits related to the closure of two correctional facilities, a controversial push to privatize health service and overtime expenses incurred as a result of consolidation combined to deepen the Department of Corrections deficit to $95.2.million.

Florida Ranks 4th in Nation for Student Success in Advanced Placement Classes

The Orlando Sentinel reports that Florida has moved up two slots, to No. 4, nationwide for percentage of high school graduates in 2012 who had passed at least one Advanced Placement (AP) course during their four years of study.

Bryan Nelson: Legislators Be Alert For Last-Minute STOLI Changes

Rep. Bryan Nelson, R-Apopka, is working with a seniors coalition to ward off what they expect will be predatory legislation that will be pushed before legislators as the 60-day regular session draws to a close.

The STANDUP for Seniors Coalition, a group of senior advocates, veterans and concerned Floridians, announced Wednesday at the Capitol that they will be advising members to lobby legislators against proposals promoted as bolstering the Stranger-originated Life Insurance (STOLI) market.
