Education Funding Could Take a Hit if Lottery Bills Are Passed

The House and Senate are currently working on a pair of matching bills involving the state lottery, and the results -- should they pass -- could see a drop in revenue funneled into the education system. Both bills contain two aspects that will impact the lottery, and while exact figures are not available, the results are essentially looked at as a drop in the net returns. The only real question is, by how much?

Florida lawmakers might want to rest up.

With about a third of the 60-day legislative session finished, the coming week is going to be filled with some of the highest-profile --- and noisiest --- issues of the year.

Felons’ voting rights. Canadian drug imports. Fracking. Armed teachers. The list goes on.

And in the middle of the week, House and Senate appropriations committees are expected to take up proposed state budgets that are in the neighborhood of $90 billion.

But the 59-year-old construction worker wound up at the center of a media frenzy this week, just for taking his medicine.
 
The soft-spoken Crawfordville man on Thursday became the first Floridian to legally purchase whole-flower cannabis, three days after Gov. Ron DeSantis signed into law a measure that did away with the state’s ban on smokable medical marijuana.

Hillsborough Transit Tax Hangs on Deceptive Ballot Language

All for Transportation (AFT), promoters of the Hillsborough County $16 billion transit tax, carpet-bombed voters last year with glossy mailers claiming it had a transportation plan to cut traffic congestion over the 30-year life of the tax.
 
The ballot amendment passed with 57 percent of the vote.
 

Unemployment Rose to 3.5 Percent in Florida in February

On Friday, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced that the unemployment rate in Florida rose slightly to 3.5 percent in February. It had been 3.4 percent in January. DeSantis took over at the start of the second week in January from then Gov. Rick Scott.  
 
DeSantis showcased the state outpaced the nation when it came to job growth. While the nation saw 1.9 percent job growth last month, Florida saw 2.7 percent job growth. 
 

Ted Yoho Champions LNG at Puerto Rico Summit

Last week, a Florida congressman traveled to Puerto Rico to take part in a summit on Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) which he continues to champion in Congress. 

U.S. Rep. Ted Yoho, R-Fla., and U.S. Rep. Jenniffer Gonzalez-Colon, R-PR, hosted the second  American LNG Summit in Puerto Rico. Last year, Yoho hosted the first summit in Jacksonville. 

More than 80 groups, elected leaders and diplomats took part in the event as they examined  LNG infrastructure, gas imports and exports, regulations, the role LNG can play in national security and new technologies.

Senate Ups Budget to $1.8 Billion for Hurricane Michael Recovery

The Florida Senate Committee on Appropriations Thursday released components of the proposed budget for the 2019-2020 fiscal year, which bring the total state investment in Hurricane Michael Recovery to $1.8 billion.
