Repurposing the Economy Can Help Stem the Tide of Terror

August 17, 2016 - 9:00am

In the immediate aftermath of World War II the German state of Bavaria wrote a new  constitution stating that all economic activity should serve the common good.  This was a direct response to the fascism that triggered the war, the Great Depression that gave rise to fascism and the laissez-faire economic and financial system that brought on the Great Depression.

An Open Letter to Donald Trump’s Children

August 16, 2016 - 8:45am

Dear Donald Jr., Ivanka, Eric & Tiffany,

As a conservative Democrat in the swing state of Florida, I wanted to share with you some concerns that I’ve got about the way your father is campaigning for president.

Let's Return to Washington to Address Zika

August 11, 2016 - 9:45am

This week, health officials reported there are now more than 400 travel related cases of Zika in Florida along with 21 locally transmitted cases.  The growing number of infections in Florida follows the first Zika-related death in Texas.

You’ll recall in June, I sent a letter to U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan expressing the urgency of this issue for states like Florida.  However, Congress failed to pass a Zika funding package before breaking for the district work period.

Why I'm Running for President

August 8, 2016 - 2:15pm

Our American nation is the greatest experiment in freedom the world has ever known. It’s given generations of citizens the blessings of liberty ever since the Founding Fathers risked their lives in what seemed like an improbable bid for independence. While the republic they created was one of imperfect freedoms, for 240 years the arc of progress and liberty has moved ever-upward. Even in times of economic crisis and war, our nation has been a singular source of hope for people throughout the world yearning for liberty, dignity and opportunity.

Is Amendment ‬4‭ ‬a Corporate Welfare Scheme or Does it Expand the Free Market?

August 4, 2016 - 10:00am

I am opposed to government corporate welfare programs,‭ ‬where the government picks winners and losers by giving financial grants and tax breaks to certain politically connected businesses.‭ ‬This is blatantly unfair to the remaining businesses and creates an uneven playing field.‭ ‬You can also label me a man-made climate change skeptic,‭ ‬to put it mildly.‭

Secure our Homeland: Fix our Broken Immigration System

July 27, 2016 - 8:45am

A country without borders is not a country. We must fix our immigration system so we control who comes and goes and that starts by securing our southern border.

The Presumption of Privacy

July 25, 2016 - 4:45pm

It is very common knowledge in America that the federal government has programs in place to to collect citizen’s phone records, as well as many other invasions of our privacy under the guise of the Patriot Act.  What most people are not aware of is the gross abuse of surveillance equipment by law enforcement at all levels of government, up to and including your local police departments.

Debbie Wasserman Schultz Will Do Anything to Stay Away From CD 23

July 25, 2016 - 2:00pm
Debbie Wasserman Schultz

Debbie Wasserman Schultz has made it clear. She would rather do anything than spend time in Congressional District 23. The former chair of the Democratic National Committee used her position as chair to stay away.

She spent much more time outside the district than she did in. There are cities in her district, primarily the ones where minorities live, that NEVER see or hear from her. She chalked that up to being the head of the DNC.

Ok, Debbie, you WERE the head of the DNC. You aren’t anymore.

If You're for Donald Trump, Lay off Ted Cruz

July 21, 2016 - 5:45pm

Attention, Donald Trump supporters. If you can stop trashing Ted Cruz over his speech at the Republican Convention Wednesday night for just a second, I'd like to call your attention to the one person in the Donald Trump camp who ISN'T trashing Ted Cruz.

Instability Continues in Haiti But U.S. Should Not Fund Elections

July 21, 2016 - 9:30am

The Haitian people must be allowed to elect a president, without further arbitrary delays, who can govern the country effectively, responsibly and democratically. Haiti’s current environment of political instability has allowed rival groups to use violence to intimidate the National Assembly and prevent it from doing its duty to replace the de facto government with an interim head of government with the sole mandate of completing the electoral cycle that was disrupted by violence earlier this year.
