Florida Scanning Driver's License Lists for Possible Ineligible Voters

More than one of every 100 registered voters in Florida, many in predominately Democratic Miami-Dade County, are being scrutinized for their citizenship and eligibility to cast a ballot.

The review is part of an ongoing operation the Division of Elections has undertaken with the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles that is checking the citizenship of 180,000 registered voters.

CAT Fund Advisers Seek to Add Billion$ to Reserves

A move to firm up the states ability to respond to a hurricane on the eve of the storm season could mean a slight uptick in the average property insurance premium.

The Florida Hurricane Catastrophe Fund advisory council on Thursday recommended that at least $1.7 billion be added to the potential reserves, while researching market conditions to determine if more could be acquired.

The fund currently has about $8.6 billion considered on-hand to help Floridians after a storm, and can pursue through bonds to increase that to $17.3 billion following a disaster.

The business advocacy organization just wants someone representing Florida in Washington who doesnt support Obamacare, who will be more in line with the business view of free markets and free enterprise.

South Florida Congressional Members Question if IKEA Had Cuban Prisoners Make Furniture

Four Republican members of Congress from Florida are among a group asking IKEAs North American president to explain reports that the Swedish furniture maker oncebenefited from Cuban prison labor for its products.

U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Miami, along with U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Miami, U.S. Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, Miami, and U.S. Rep. David Rivera, R-Miami, were among the signers of a letter seeking a prompt meetingover reports that IKEA had teamed with Cuban dictator Fidel Castro in the 1980s to use political prisoners to make some furniture.

The Florida Chamber of Commerce honored 41 Republican lawmakers and three Democrats from among the states 160 legislators for support of the business advocacy groups agenda in the 2012 regular session.

Top honors went to House Speaker Dean Cannon, R-Winter Park, named the 2012 Most Valuable Legislator and Rep. Chris Dorworth, R-Lake Mary, given the Chairmans Award, in an announcement released by the chamber on Tuesday.

The MLV is the chambers premier award, honoring a single lawmaker for leadership on free enterprise issues.

In her commencement speech Monday night -- final one for a University of South Florida-Polytechnic graduating class -- Sen. Paula Dockery, R-Lakeland, commended the class for its herculean efforts to halt the forced USF divorce.

The name of Sen. JD Alexander, R-Lake Wales, who could be considered the father of the new independent Florida Polytechnic University that will come into life July 1, was not included in Dockerys speech -- a speech that touched heavily on character and leadership.

Rick Scott Quietly Awaits FAMU Board's Response to Hazing Death Arrests

The governor appears to be biding his time with Florida A&M University.

Gov. Rick Scott said he isnt going to take any action over James H. Ammons, the FAMU president, until he sees how the FAMU board of trustees handles the leadership at the Tallahassee school now that 13 students were charged last week in the hazing death of a member of the famed Marching 100 band.

The board soundly rejected Scotts call for Ammons to be suspended in December while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigated the death of Robert Champion.
