State Regulators Working to Patch PIP Reform Loophole

Insurance regulators have been working for a couple of weeks to fix glitches in the states reformed auto insurance law the same glitches a Democratic lawmaker pointed out to the governor in a letter on Monday.

The state Agency for Health Care Administration, which oversees licensing medical providers to provide PIP coverage, released a three-page memo earlier this month that acknowledged the mistake and -- in the view of the agency -- has deemed the later date as the start date.

The changes on paper become law July 1.

Florida Ports Wrongly Seen as Threat to West Coast Trade

A recent report by The Bond Buyer indicated that officials at the Port of Los Angeles are concerned that ports along the East and Gulf coasts will become bigger competitors for cargo as the Panama Canal expansion nears completion.

The May 18 report by the daily finance newspaper, titled Panama Expansion May Help Competing Ports Topple L.A. From its No. 1 Position, quickly found its way via email into Gov. Rick Scotts office.

Senators Act to Block Hikes to Veterans' Tricare Health Care Costs

A bipartisan effort to stave off President Obamas plan to boost health-care premiums for certain active and retired military personnel has been introduced by U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Miami, and Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J.

The Senate bill came as a separate effort to roll back the fee increases to the military's health care system, Tricare, as approved by the House on Friday as part of the $643 billion National Defense Authorization Act.

The vote was 299 to 120, with 16 Republicans joining the opposition and 77 Democrats voting in favor.

Florida Unemployment Hits Lowest Mark Since January 2009

Florida labor leaders are touting the work of the states regional workforce boards as unemployment fell to its lowest mark since January 2009.

Floridas unemployment stood at 8.7 percent, down from 9 percent a month earlier, according to figures released Friday from the state Department of Economic Opportunity.

The Cuban-American delegation in Congress is strongly criticizing the U.S. government for an enormous mistake in granting a visa to Raul Castros daughter, who plans to attend a conference next week in San Francisco.

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Miami, posted video on YouTube in both English and Spanish calling the U.S. State Department's decision to issue a visa to Mariela Castro Espin "shameful."

Task Force to Probe High-Tech Readiness of Schools, Students

A new task force on higher education has been formed to determine if the states universities and colleges can handle the anticipated call for high-tech students, and more importantly, if there will be enough students who can handle the baccalaureateprograms' workload.

Florida Board of Governor Chairman Dean Colson announced Wednesday the creation of a task force to see if the states higher education system is physically ready for the proposed increase in baccalaureate degrees, from 53,000 to 90,000 by 2025.
