GOP Senate Candidates Continue to Clash Over Conservatism

With less than three months to go until the Republican primary to see who will emerge to challenge U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, the leading Republicans in the race looked to get their conservative credentials in order -- and question their opponents right-of-center bonafides.

On Tuesday U.S. Rep. Connie Mack unveiled the team of conservatives he hopes will propel him to victory in the Aug.14 Republican primary.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott got his first taste of the kind of advice he could get from Adam Hollingsworth during the 2010 GOP primary.

The campaign of then-Naples businessman Scott was prepping for debates with seasoned politician Bill McCollum. It was a scary prospect.

Public speaking was a piece of cake for McCollum, a former 10-term U.S. congressman wrapping up his first term as Floridas attorney general. He was a former courtroom attorney, accustomed to appearing on podiums and before crowds, discussing state policy.

Holding Schools 'Harmless,' State Lowers Bar on FCAT Writing Scores

An emergency meeting of the state Board of Education on Tuesday lowered the passing scores on the 2012 FCAT writing exam in an effort to hold districts "harmless" over plummeting test performance.

Where scores averaged in the 80 percent range in 2010 and 2011, results tumbled to 30 percent this year.The sharply lower writing scores more closely matched the reading results, according to earlier stories by Sunshine State News.

Department of Education Commissioner Gerard Robinson admitted that "several things slipped through" prior to the administration of this year's exams.

FCAT Writing Scores Plummet, Force Question: What to Do?

Preliminary grades on a ramped up statewide writing assessment are so bad that state education officials said Monday they will hold an emergency meeting Tuesday to figure out what to do next.

Passing scores on the FCAT writing assessment plummeted from 81 percent to 27 percent for fourth graders and showed similar drops in eighth and 10th grades, according to statewide results of the FCAT writing assessment released by the Department of Education.
