Tip of the hat to Bill Bledsoe from the Prohibition Party for bringing this one to my attention. James Moore, an attorney, will be doing performances at the Florida Chautauqua Assembly in January, as they offer "A Journey into Florida" in DeFuniak Springs. Moore will be playing the roles of two of Floridas most famous governors -- Andrew Jackson, who barely stuck around as military governor of the territory before hightailing it back to Tennessee, and Sidney Catts.

While he is currently engaged in a fight with U.S. Rep. Tom Price to see who takes over the Republican Policy Committee, the fifth man in charge of the Republican majority, U.S. Rep. Connie Mack from Florida, took aim at President Barack Obama on international issues on Monday. Mack, the ranking Republican on the House Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, attacked Obama as news broke that drug lord Walid Makled-Garcia, who was arrested in Columbia back in August and faces charges in the U.S., could be headed to Venezuela instead of America.

Florida's unemployment rate stands at 12 percent, but that won't be getting retailers down this holiday shopping season. Florida Retail Federation CEO Rick McAllister pointed to increased consumer confidence and "frugality fatigue" among shoppers in giving an optimistic outlook for retailers' busiest season. U.S. retail sales are expected to increase 2.3 percent over last year, but McAllister predicts a 3 to 4 percent rise in Florida retail sales compared to last holiday season.

For those of you concerned about the staggering start by LeBron James & Co., let not your heart be troubled. So says Wall Street Journal sports columnist Jason Gay (yes, the venerable bible of business has a sports page). Bottom line to all the worriers: "Only weirdos who sing to their cats care about the NBA in November. Start watching in May, like normal people do. Pat Riley will have it all figured out by then." Read all about it here.

A Wall Street Journal stock picker likes the prospects at Florida Power & Light. Calling utility companies "energized" for growth generally, Reshma Kapadia noted that FPL (NextEra Energy, NEE) is currently trading at 12 times next year's expected earnings, "among the cheapest stocks in the sector."

Ron Klein wasn't the National Education Association's only loser in Congress this year. The teachers' union targeted 10 U.S. House races this election, but in a horrendous year for its subsidiary (i.e., the Democratic Party), the NEA could only manage a 3-7 win-loss record. Klein, D-Boca Raton, was defeated by Republican Allen West by 10 percentage points. Other specially backed union-backed candidates lost in Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Texas. Victories were notched in New York, North Carolina and Ohio.
