Florida Senate President Mike Haridopolos, R-Merritt Island, criticized Democrat U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, whom he is trying to unseat in 2012, for politicizing the killing of Osama bin Laden. Nelson told reporters in Tallahassee Monday that a GOP-backed elections bill that prevents voters from changing their address on Election Day would disenfranchise the soldiers who conducted the raid on bin Laden's hideout in Pakistan. The bill was recently amended in the Senate to provide an exception for military members and their families to change their address on Election Day.

Long-awaited action on the Senate's immigration bill will wait for another day. Slogging through Monday's agenda, Senate President Mike Haridopolos said Senate Bill 2040 will be heard Tuesday. "We want to make sure everyone knows what they're voting on," Haridopolos said of the heavily amended measure that started out as a straight E-Verify bill. Under pressure from business groups and migrant-rights organizations, the measure has stalled. The House, meantime, is holding up its tougher enforcement measure (HB 7089) until the Senate votes.

Call your local state senator and make your voice heard," LeMieux (or an aide) wrote. Neither LeMieux nor Adam Hasner offered a comment when Sunshine State News raised the issue last week in regard to state Senate President Mike Haridopolos' handling of the immigration issue. Hasner's camp was still mum on deadline.

Did the United States cede the moral high ground when it dumped Osama bin Laden's body into the ocean? The decision by U.S. forces to bury the terrorist kingpin at sea has roiled the Arab street. Muslim clerics told the Associated Press Monday that bin Laden's sea burial was a violation of Islamic tradition that may further provoke militant calls for revenge attacks against American targets.
