Palin said she could be more effective in helping common-sense conservatism on the sidelines, aiding other candidates. While there had been speculation that she would run -- and Palin left the door open to the possibility -- she had done little to set up a campaign operation in early states like Iowa, New Hampshire and Florida.

Rick Perry of Texas announced on Wednesday that his presidential campaign brought in more than $17 million during the seven weeks he was an active candidate in the third quarter of 2011. From Aug. 13, the day Perry announced he was running, until Sept. 30, more than 22,000 supporters -- 49 percent of them from the Lone Star State -- contributed to the Perry campaign. The Perry team announced that they had $15 million on hand.

GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney will be in Tallahassee today, meeting separately with business leaders and Gov. Rick Scott. Romney, who took what he recalled as his sixth trip to the Central Florida retirement haven of The Villages on Tuesday, will bring his campaign to the Seminole Wind Restaurant, 2226 N. Monroe St., just after noon. At 2:15 p.m., Romney is slated to meet with Gov. Scott in the governors office at the Capitol. Scott hasnt formally endorsed any GOP primary candidate.
