Shots were fired outside the U.S. Capitol Thursday afternoon andCapitol police told people to shelter in place. The incident appeared to begin around 2:19 p.m. and Capitol police say the Capitol was locked down, according to the Washington Post. Officers with semi-automatic weapons were seen running for the exits and camping out on the first floor of the House side of the Capitol on watch, but reports of shots inside were unconfirmed.At least one Capitol police officer was injured in the incident, police said.

A new poll shows Floridians dont like George Zimmerman -- but they dont think he is guilty of the death of Trayvon Martin. Public Policy Polling (PPP), a firm with connections to Democrats, released a poll on Thursday which shows only 20 percent of those surveyed have a favorable view of Zimmerman while 47 percent see him in an unfavorable light. But a plurality of those surveyed -- 47 percent -- think he is not guilty of Martins death while 37 percent think he is guilty. A jury unanimously ruled Zimmerman was not guilty in a high-profile trial.

A new poll shows U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., could be looking at a close race for a second term in 2016. Rubio is considered a leading contender for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016. Public Policy Polling (PPP), a firm with connections to prominent Democrats, shows Rubio is slightly underwater with 43 percent approving of him but 45 percent disapproving of him. Despite that, 42 percent of those surveyed believe Rubios positions are about right though 37 percent think he is too conservative and 10 percent believe he is too liberal.

Officials from 16 South Florida counties disregarded the closed-for-business sign on Washington, D.C., Wednesday, meeting in the nation's capital with the Congressional Everglades Caucus to encourage water projects they believe will relieve pollution-assaulted waterways on both sides of Lake Okeechobee. Included at the meeting were representatives of the counties within the South Florida Water Management District, including district officials themselves.

Texting while driving just became illegal in Florida this week, but a Florida Atlantic University professor has invented a system that can stop your phone from texting entirely while you're driving on the road. "If you are above, let's say, 8 miles an hour, we can say, that's driving, I can stop you just like that," said engineering professor Daniel Raviv. The professor has developed technology that uses a combination of road maps and GPS data to determine who's on the road, then shut off their phone's texting features.
