Gabriella B. Ferraro, communications manager for Martin County, posted an explanation and defense of the county's lobbying programs and its lobbyist after Sunshine State News published Nancy Smith's April 29 column, "Brian Ballard's Worth the Disappointment, Reasons Martin Commission."  The SSN column followed a story in the local Treasure Coast News that reported Tallahassee lobbyist Ballard not only is Martin's chief lobbyist, but he lobbies for one of Martin's prime antagonists, All Aboard Florida.

Martin County Commission Refused to Follow the Law, Judge Suggests

May 2, 2016 - 6:00am

Last Thursday the trial court in Florida's Martin County let the infamous, anti-property-rights Martin County Commission members know that they can’t hide public emails behind private email addresses and think they will get away with it. One of those commission members -- a former judge, of all things -- failed to turn over emails regarding public matters to a property owner who requested them. The commissioner held the emails for years without turning them over, despite a legal requirement to do so.

David Jolly Tries to Separate from the Field

April 30, 2016 - 6:00am

It was quite a week for Florida Congressman David Jolly. Until the last week in April, Jolly was one of five Republicans running to succeed Marco Rubio in the U.S. Senate.

That is still the case, but in an important race overwhelmed by the saga of Donald Trump, name recognition is the key. Bonus points are available for anyone who can name the other candidates from both parties.

This race seems to hardly register a blip on the political sonar. Despite this, Jolly took full advantage of multiple opportunities to get his name in front of millions.

Vern Buchanan

A Florida congressman cheered the news that a Green Beret was fully reinstated in the Army after he was forced out of service after reporting an Afghan ally abusing a child. “What took so long?” Vern Buchanan asked on Friday, after a review board determined Sgt. Charles Martland could remain in the service.

The impasse over Florida's next insurance commissioner ended Friday.

Remaining in-house, Gov. Rick Scott and state Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater --- in their third attempt to reach a joint recommendation on the high-profile job --- agreed to promote Deputy Commissioner David Altmaier to become the state's top insurance regulator.

As commissioner, Altmaier, who a decade ago was working as a high-school math teacher and track coach in Kentucky, will see his salary increase from $115,000 a year to $165,000 a year.

Republican Voters Accept Trump as Inevitable Presidential Nominee

April 29, 2016 - 12:00pm

The majority of Republican voters finally believe Republican presidential hopeful and billionaire  Donald Trump will be their party’s nominee come November.

The Rasmussen Reports poll solidly confirms most voters believe the two likely nominees for the Republican and Democratic Party will be Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.

The new survey of likely Republican voters found an overwhelming majority -- 89 percent -- now think the firebrand frontrunner is likely to win the GOP nomination.
