It wasn’t too long ago when gasoline here and nationwide was more than $4 a gallon and tourism agencies were handing out gas cards to offset fuel costs and entice out-of-towners to visit.

Things sure have changed.

Pump prices, despite the gradual bump in recent weeks, remain far lower than that historic figure, hovering below $3. Out-of-staters are no longer deterred from driving or flying to Florida for business or pleasure. And it’s paying headline-making dividends.

A new economic analysis conducted by a University of Florida/Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) team in Gainesville has confirmed Mexican imports have significantly harmed fruit and vegetable producers in the Sunshine State. 

A steadily increasing surge of Mexican products has entered the U.S. domestic market during Florida’s peak winter seasons since the North American Free Trade Agreement was implemented in 1993. Florida growers have lost large portions of the U.S. domestic market as well as sales volumes.

Fried Rallies Support for the Hemp Industry

Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried on Friday encouraged supporters of a new state hemp industry to tell Gov. Ron DeSantis to sign a bill that would lead to a regulatory framework for the crop.

Fried said an envisioned hemp “revolution” needs the governor’s signature on the bill (SB 1020), which would create a hemp program within the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

This resulted in a chorus of criticism from politicians (across the ideological spectrum), pundits, and the general public. The Trump administration even launched a website to allow users who have been suspended or banned from social media platforms to voice a their complaints about political bias.
